Capolavoro. Questa è la parola più appropriata per un album di questo calibro. Un pezzo di storia, un album da ascoltare tutto d'un fiato, un concentrato di emozioni a non finire che si colloca all'inizio dei mitici anni '80 e più precisamente nel 1983 quando la NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) procedeva a gonfie vele grazie sopratutto a gruppi gloriosi come i mitici Iron Maiden.
Già, perchè per chi non lo sapesse questo è il quarto album della vergine di ferro. Un album esplosivo, granitico, pieno di idee e di passione che segue dopo al capolavoro dell'anno precedente: "The number of the Beast".
Ma ora passiamo a scartare l'opera e ad analizzarla da dentro. Proviamo ad assaporare l'essenza delle singole canzoni. L'album si apre con la famosissima e fantastica "Where Eagles Dare" e parte davvero alla grande. Chitarre al "galoppo", la voce di Bruce Dickinson raggiunge toni inarrivabili e si respira un'atmosfera mitica e la canzone giunge al termine dopo sei minuti circa di puro godimento musicale. Si passa quindi alla poetica "Revelation", scritta dal singer Bruce Dickinson, nella quale si alternano pezzi lenti e melodici a momenti in cui i tempi scanditi dalla batteria del mitico Niko Mc Brain diventano più veloci e il solito basso di Steve pulsa come non mai. Davvero fantastico in questa Song il riff iniziale e lo strepitoso assolo che regala più di un emozione. Segue l'altrettanto famosa "Flight of Icarus", che verrà riproposta dalla band durante moltissimi concerti dell'epoca. Il ritornello è epico e il solito basso di Steve sovrasta addiritttura il suono delle chitarre in molti frangenti, cosa che non avviene nella seguente "Die With Your Boots On", davvero energetica e in cui sono le chitarre, potenti e veloci, a farla da padrone. Un concentrato quindi di energia e ironia, cosa che anche il titolo lascia trasparire. Si giunge poi alla quinta traccia, il capolavoro pluriosannato dai fan, la traccia immancabile ad ogni concerto degli "Iron", stiamo parlando ovviamente della fantastica "The Trooper", la song più veloce e tirata dell'album, con un riff strepitoso, un assolo "Bruciadita" e un ritornello che è entrato nella storia del gruppo londinese. La seguente "Still life", sebbene non sia all'altezza di quest'ultima è un altra canzone memorabile e si apre con un intro in cui una voce cupa parla in una lingua che sembra non voler dire niente, non si capiscono le parole. Se però questa viene ascoltata al contrario dice la frase: "What ho sed de t’ing wid de t’ree bonce? Don’t meddle wid t’ings you don’t understand" ovvero "Che cosa ha detto il mostro dalle tre teste? Niente che tu possa capire". Ovviamente si riferisce a cerbero, il cane a tre teste, ed è probabilmente una chicca che gli Iron hanno voluto lasciare ai loro fan, una sorta di "bonus" da scoprire. La track numero 7 e "Quest For fire", brano tranquillo con un bel ritornello, caratterizzato da una struttura semplice ma non per questo noioso. Si merita ampiamente la sufficenza, così come la song successiva "Sun And Steel" che scivola via che è un piacere. Si giunge quindi alla song finale "To Tame a Land", scritta interamente da "Steve Harris", davvero molto evocativa compreso lo splendido assolo, che chiude l'album davvero in bellezza.
Concludo dicendo che nessun fan degli Iron Maiden o amante della "new wave" dovrebbe lasciarsi scappare un album di questo calibro, che ha contribuito alla storia di un genere e che anche adesso, a distanza di 23 anni dalla sua uscita, può continuare a regalare emozioni uniche e favolose.

Piece of mind resta tutto oggi una pietra miliare del metal in generale.
L’arrivo del batterista... portò un senso ritmico più quadrato e solido, oltre ad una versatilità maggiore rispetto al suo predecessore.

Iron Maiden is Heavy Metal ‘cause Heavy Metal is Piece Of Mind.
Definire esaltante (per non dire devastante) una song come 'The Trooper' è semplice e pura constatazione.

Revelations è uno dei picchi assoluti di bellezza e poesia mai raggiunti dalla Vergine di Ferro.
