11 ottobre 1986, i Maiden lanciavano sul mercato un disco molto particolare, diverso dal suo predecessore ("Powerslave") e pieno di nuove sperimentazioni. La formazione era quella classica dei da "Piece of Mind" a "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" e comprendeva: Steve Harris (basso), Bruce Dickinson (voce), Adrian Smith (chitarra), Dave Murray (chitarra) e Nicko mc Brain (batteria).
Questo lavoro portò molte novità nelle sonorità della Vergine di Ferro; ad esempio i sintetizzatori delle chitarre e del basso. Questo fu criticato da alcuni fan che preferivano il sound più grezzo di "Killers" o "The Number of the Beast", ma è sicuro che stiamo parlando di un disco che ha fatto storia e dal quale è derivato un tour mondiale altrettanto spettacolare.
La prima traccia è "Caught Somewhere in Time" che ci catapulta subito in un universo futuristico con l'intro di tastiere e chitarre sintetizzate le quali si integrano perfettamente con la stupenda base ritmica del duo Harris-Mc Brain; poi l'esplosione e la rude voce di Dickinson che ci trasportano letteralmente all'interno di questi 6 minuti di pura potenza e precisione di esecuzione. Una delle tracci migliori del disco è la successiva "Wasted Years" (primo singolo estratto dall'album) che attraverso il suo testo malinconico ci invita a riflettere sul tempo che va perso ogni giorno. Veramente un concentrato di emozioni i ritornelli cantati a meraviglia da un Dickinson in ottima forma. La terza traccia è la potente ed energica "Sea of Madness" che ci porta attraverso i suoi riffs potenti fino al capolavoro assoluto del disco: "Heaven Can Wait". Una canzone spaziale (per rimanere in tema), perfetta in ogni sua parte. L'intro con le tastiere, poi le due chitarre che corrono veloci sulla ritmica di Mc Brain e la voce di Dickinson che ci convince che il paradiso può aspettare un altro giorno.... di "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" è molto bello il testo, evocativo e ben curato, che parla appunto della solitudine del corridore di lunghe distanze.
"Stranger in a Strange Land" è il secondo singolo estratto dall'album e colpisce appieno con la stupenda interpretazione di Dickinson. "Deja-Vu" parte con un intro di chitarra molto calmo per esplodere in una melodia veloce e accattivantee un testo che parla delle strane sensazioni che ogni tanto attanagliano la nostra mente quando ci sembra di fare una cosa che abbiamo già fatto o di intraprendere una conversazione che abbiamo già avuto.... la chiusura è lasciata ad una canzone a sfondo storico:"Alexander the Great (356-323 b.C.)". La canzone si apre con un discorso di re Filippo di Macedonia e poi parte con un incedere lento di rullante, come in una marcia, seguito dalle chitarre epiche di Smith e Murray. Poi il suono si apre in una tipica melodia alla Maiden, con il basso cavalcante di Harris, gli stupendi acuti di Dickinson e gli assoli spaventosi dei due chitarristi.
In conclusione un disco che ha portato tante novità nel sound della Vergine, e che si posiziona sicuramente ai primi posti tra i lavori del gruppo più amato dell'heavy metal.

Il disco presenta molte ed originali sperimentazioni, a partire dall’introduzione delle tastiere in sottofondo.

"Dopo dischi estremamente duri, soleni ed epici come Powerslave e Piece of Mind, la 'Vergine di ferro' pubblica un disco estremamente controverso: abbandona gli scenari faraonici del passato e si butta a capofitto nel futuro."
"La splendida 'Stranger in a Strange Land' è un altro grandissimo punto per il gruppo, mentre 'Alexander the Great' è il miglior brano del disco, purtroppo mai suonato in sede live."

È come vivere in questo mondo futuristico, e si ha come la sensazione di non riuscire a uscirne.
Ogni scritta che vedi, anche le più insignificanti, ti fa inventare un avvenimento della storia che non c’entra niente o che non si è ancora presentato.

Stiamo parlando di uno di quegli album che... finisce sempre fra i primi 3, senza pensarci più di tanto.
Dovrei scrivere una recensione a parte solamente per questi otto minuti e mezzo di pura atmosfera, perfezione stilistica, varietà, complessità, gusto, estro e amalgama fra testo e musica.
