..........ladies and gentlemen........THE IRON MAIDEN!!!!
Quando si parla di Iron Maiden non riesco a non esaltarmi, così come un uomo (normale) quando guarda le nudità dell'Arcuri, quando un metallaro parla di questi 5 ragazzi (adesso 6 simpatici nonnetti), va in palla!!!
Questo è un disco dei "maiden" che mi piace molto, è curato bene nelle sonorità e non lascia l'ascoltatore deluso, forse alcuni diranno che si fatto un passo indietro rispetto al suo sacrosanto predecessore "Powerslave", e io vi risponderò che non è così, il disco presenta molte ed originali sperimentazioni, a partire dall'introduzione delle tastiere in sottofondo, inoltre le chitarre e il basso sono equalizzati e filtrati, per ottenere al meglio un suono pulito e limpido, quasi da record per quegli anni!
Inserire il cd nel vostro impianto stereo, pigiate il tasto PLAY....reading........
La prima traccia, "Caught somewhere in time", dopo circa 30 secondi di intro tastiera-chitarra, attacca con uno stupendo giro di basso di Harris (mi piace da matti quel suo suono grave e tuonante) e prosegue senza mai perdersi in "già sentiti", man mano sboccia come un fiore, matura e non annoia, poi il ritornello è favoloso, (e chi di voi, "metal-guys" non ha mai canticchiato sotto la doccia il ritornello, eh?).
Si passa a "Wasted Years", a mio parere la canzone più bella dell'album, non riesco a non alzare lo stereo a manetta, è trooooppooo bella, canto ,anzi urlo a scuarciagola il ritornello, mentre i miei genitori chiamano preoccupati il 118....
"Sea of madness" non è da meno della precendente traccia, McBrain, a singulti del suo magnifico doppio pedale, ci fa pogare di brutto, l'andamento della canzone è piuttosto spedito, veloce, coinvolgente, ma finita la canzone ci troviamo questa "Heaven can wait", che, dopo un'intro lento e un pò cupo in pieno stile maideniano continua power e McBrain compie anche nella suddetta traccia un lavoro davvero impeccabile, preciso e veloce, ma la canzone non mi piace tanto a parte il magnifico coretto finale, molto azzeccato, carino anche il solo di chitarre.
"The loliness of the long distance runner" parte anch'essa lenta e si sviluppa poi veloce, niente di più da dire, invece la bella "Stranger in a strange land" è fatta bene, curata, molto bello il giro di basso, canticchiabile e bello il ritornello.
Diciamo che su vizio comune delle song di questo album, anche "Deja-vu" parte lenta e si sviluppa power. Il testo mi sembra un pò banale e astratto, ma la canzone, soprattutto grazie ad un grande Nicko McBrain ispirato e in forma, non scende mai sul mediocre.
L'untima canzone "Alexander the great", narra le gesta di Alessandro Magno, parte lenta e molto raffinata, (quasi come la favolosa "Hellowed be thy name" di "The number of the beast), e si sviluppa su un tema ritmico di batteria più veloce (che ne ricorda molto l'andazzo infatti), le tastiere in alcune parti la rendono suggestiva, ma il cantato troppo narrativo e quindi un pò cadenzato non coinvolge l'ascoltatore, ma successivamente quando Dickinson va in Stand-by, la canzone prende atmosfera e fascino, le tastiere fanno da sipario che si apre sugli stupendi e melodici solo chitarristici.
Tirando le somme, è un disco che, come tutti quelli degli Iron Maiden, presenta alcuni difetti che si ripetono, ma devo dire che le tastiere, scelte a buon gusto di Harris, sono gradevoli ed originali per questo gruppo, poi la pulizia lo premia ulteriormente, il voto è meritato.

"Dopo dischi estremamente duri, soleni ed epici come Powerslave e Piece of Mind, la 'Vergine di ferro' pubblica un disco estremamente controverso: abbandona gli scenari faraonici del passato e si butta a capofitto nel futuro."
"La splendida 'Stranger in a Strange Land' è un altro grandissimo punto per il gruppo, mentre 'Alexander the Great' è il miglior brano del disco, purtroppo mai suonato in sede live."

Stiamo parlando di uno di quegli album che... finisce sempre fra i primi 3, senza pensarci più di tanto.
Dovrei scrivere una recensione a parte solamente per questi otto minuti e mezzo di pura atmosfera, perfezione stilistica, varietà, complessità, gusto, estro e amalgama fra testo e musica.
