Una delle produzioni più vigorose mai sentite nel mondo metal.
L’album inizia con la title track “painkiller” con uno degli intro di batteria più iconici del metal, per passare subito ad un indimenticabile riff di chitarra, mentre la voce di Rob Halford ci narra di un "mostro di metallo" arrivato sulla Terra per salvare l'umanità, passando per assoli fulminei che ci trasportano verso la fine del brano con un’atmosfera carica di tensione esplodendo in un finale epico. Le tracce si susseguono senza tregua attraverso riff potentissimi, mastodontici, assoli affilati e veloci, mentre Halford narra di "devastanti truppe infernali" e "demoni in nero pronti ad uccidere".
La seconda parte dell'album si apre con "night crawler" con un riff "nero" che ci catapulta in un temporale notturno; siamo soli e spaventati, inseguiti da un demone assetato di sangue. Si prosegue con le malvagi "Between the hammer & the anvil" e "A touch of evil", fino ad arrivare all'inno di battaglia "Battle Hymm" , che ci trasporta nel pieno di una battaglia "One Shot and Glory" forti e pieni di orgoglio, pronti ad affrontare il nemico.
Tutte le canzoni trasudano violenza e potenza, dai passaggi di batteria esplosivi "painkiller", "all guns blazing", "between the hammer & the anvil", agli assoli di chitarra eseguiti con minuziosa perizia tecnica "painkiller", “metal meltdown”, alla voce incredibile di Rob Halford, che passa dall’essere lacerante attraverso acuti così potenti da lasciare sbalorditi, al suadente "a touch of evil". Le chitarre di Tipton/ Downing sono caratterizzate da una distorsione molto potente e curata da creare un suono così unico da lasciare attoniti, accompagnate dal basso lineare di Hill e la batteria maestosa e martellante di Travis.
L'intero lavoro gode di una esecuzione di gran classe da parte della band inglese, portando l’ Heavy Metal alle stelle.

Probabilmente il più espressivo ed importante capolavoro dei tanti capolavori del gruppo di Birmingham.
Un cd contenente solamente gemme di purissimo Classic Metal, suonate sublimemente da quelli che sono, probabilmente, i migliori musicisti/compositori che il Classic abbia mai avuto.

Painkiller rappresenta il picco raggiunto dal heavy metal come genere purissimo.
Il miglior disco heavy 'puro' mai concepito.

Non ho dubbi a collocare questo lavoro tra i migliori album heavy-metal della storia!
