Digito "Klaus Nomi" sul motore di ricerca di Debaser e non trovo nessuna recensione: sono sorpreso ma fino a un certo punto, un po' deluso, ma la prima cosa che penso è la seguente: "questa è un'occasione d'oro che non devi lasciarti sfuggire". Con calma però, servono tatto, documentazione e umiltà; so perfettamente di non essere la persona migliore per parlare di questo artista, se non altro per ragioni meramente anagrafiche, però tanto vale provarci. Cosa mi ha lasciato al primo ascolto l'omonimo esordio di questo bizzarro artista? Oltre a un leggero mal di testa e un banalissimo ma inevitabile "figata assurda" la sensazione predominante è stata sicuramente la meraviglia, con una punta di straniamento. Abbiamo questa specie di novello Farinelli in grado di raggiungere tonalità assurdamente alte per una voce maschile, assolutamente impresentabile per il mainstream più pantofolaio e abitudinario, che si cimenta con questi tunes di provenienza miscellanea riletti in chiave un po' dance un po' new wave, roba che forse potrebbe anche "sfondare" se solo 'sto scherzo della natura stesse un po' più tra le righe e si attenesse ai gusti de laggente.
Klaus Nomi ha avuto più notorietà e seguito da morto che da vivo, e basta un rapido ascolto a questo album per capire il perchè: la sua carriera è durata troppo poco, non c'è modo di sapere quali strade avrebbe intrapreso, se prima o poi sarebbe riuscito ad arrivare ad un pubblico più ampio, ma in questo esordio non ha fatto assolutamente nulla per mascherare in qualche modo la sua "diversità", per renderla più accattivante ed appetibile al grande pubblico, come invece ha saputo fare con assoluta maestria il suo idolo David Bowie, l'unico ad avergli dato una concreta possibilità di emergere dall'underground. Freak e orgoglioso di esserlo, probabilmente anche consapevole delle inevitabili conseguenze della sua scelta artistica; comunque sia, "Klaus Nomi" è qualcosa di indimenticabile già a partire dalla copertina, perfetto indicatore dell'unicità e del carisma della proposta musicale.
"Total Eclipse" è sicuramente uno dei tormentoni più efficacemente micidiali che abbia mai ascoltato, una deliziosa follia pop che già basterebbe per il massimo dei voti, ma c'è anche molto altro: la brillante aria kitsch-vaudeville di "Nomi Song", il reggae ipnotico e rallentato di "Wasting My Time" e soprattutto "Keys Of Life", straniante cantico di monaci medievali su cui Nomi declama la sua visionaria profezia, "Exploring new dimension, new lifestyle my intention, do not ignore my advice, you hold the keys of life". Questo per quanto riguarda il materiale inedito, poi ci sono alcune cover di classici pop anni '60, tra cui giganteggia una "You Don't Own Me" travolgente e con un testo ad immagine e somiglianza il personaggio, interpretata con una teatralità che sembra quasi fare il verso allo stile di Nina Hagen, poi l'extravaganza echeggiante e quasi spettrale di "The Twist" e quella più frivola e danzereccia di "Lighting Strikes"; canzoni completamente trasfigurate, di cui Klaus Nomi si appropria e su cui impone il proprio marchio indelebile. Tanto per gradire, perchè non aggiungere anche qualche "vera" aria operistica? Ma si, perchè no, ecco allora un paio di classici come "Cold Song" di Henry Purcell e "Samson And Delilah" di Camille Saint-Saens; qui Klaus Nomi si limita ad un lavoro puramente interpretativo, anche musicalmente ci si attiene senza bizzarrie alle composizioni originali ma è perfetto così, penso che l'artista abbia voluto comunicare un messaggio preciso: su alcune cose ci si può scatenare e fare cabaret, altre vanno prese più sul serio.
Avete presente quelle classifichine che ogni tanto si divertono a stilare i vari giornali musicali? Tipo i 100/200/500/un milione/dieci milioni di album da ascoltare prima di morire? Ecco, nella mia di classifica questo è un punto fermo, un disco essenziale e di impatto travolgente. Nella sua semplicità, perchè pur sempre di Pop, spesso pure molto datato, si tratta, ritengo questo album e questo artista assai più coraggiosi, innovativi e degni di nota di un'infinita pletora di fenomeni di massa, rock e non rock, ascesi ad uno status di celebrità mondiali. Ma rimanere confinati in una nicchia relativamente ristretta era un prezzo inevitabile per una scelta artistica di questo tipo.
