Se 13 anni fa aveste chiesto a Jhonatan Davis, singer del noto gruppo crossover metal Korn, se avrebbero mai suonato uno show acustico per Mtv questo ragazzino dalla voce (allora) psicotica e rabbiosa vi avrebbe riso in faccia e avrebbe continuato a trangugiare la bottiglia di Jagermeister, il suo liquore preferito. 13 anni fa i Korn e il crossover metal in generale erano visti come la nuova sponda per l'heavy metal, una novità, tant'è che la rivista "Huh" aveva recensito il loro splendido esordio come "il metal più intenso dai tempi di Master Of Puppets dei Metallica".
13 anni fa (o meglio nei 90) l'Unplugged diventò una moda: Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Cure, Kiss e compagnia bella, il mondo del rock che per una sera staccava la spina e utilizzava chitarre acustiche suonando le canzoni con la dolcezza al posto della sana cattiveria rock n' roll, una moda dalla quale il gruppo pensò di starsene alla larga suonando e pestando duro in ogni occasione, anche in tour di supporto ad album non particolarmente pesanti ("Untauchables" e "See You On The Other Side"). Oggi dopo mille e mille sperimentazioni, che però in un modo o nell'altro rientravano nell'ambito metal/rock anche i Korn staccano la spina per una serata, quella dell'Unplugged, un'iniziativa che sicuramente verrà criticata per il suo fine unicamente commerciale e per l'ennesimo sodalizio tra Mtv e il gruppo in questione: tutto questo sarà anche vero ma non si può dire a livello strettamente musicale che questo show sia suonato male, che sia moscio, che sia privo di inventiva o originalità, semmai tutto il contrario.
Jhonatan Davis non è più il ragazzo di Bakersfield incazzato con tutti e con tutto e la sua voce l'ha imparata ad usare bene e soprattutto nei momenti più melodici e "romantici" davvero delizia l'udito. Fieldy invece è la vecchia roccia della band, lui al suo stile non rinuncia (quasi) mai ed eccolo lì accovacciato sulla sedia con il suo basso acustico bello sleppato a dovere, Munky è riuscito ad introdurre una chitarra da flamenco spagnolo in un concerto rock (poi ditemi se non è originalità questa!) e poi c'è la vera novità del disco: Zac Baird, il tastierista che ha accompagnato la band nel tour di "See You On The Other Side" e che sta lavorando anche alla scrittura del nuovo album e che supporta la band anche qui con una performance pazzesca, la sua abilità dietro i tasti e le sue melodie incantano sovrastando gli altri strumenti e perfino gli stessi Korn, bè non sarebbe una cattiva idea togliergli quella maschera (manco fossero gli Slipknot) e farlo entrare in pianta stabile nel gruppo. E poi ci sono tutti gli altri curiosi e interessanti strumenti di cui si sono circondati, tra i quali figurano dei taiko drums nipponici, le percussioni, un trombone, un armonica e ovviamente Patterson alla seconda chitarra acustica, strumenti singolari che rendono l'album davvero speciale! Ma il fattore più importante che porta questa puntata di MTV Unplugged nell'Olimpo dei Concerti acustici è la quasi completa riscrittura delle musiche dei brani, non solo nuovi arraggiamenti con altri strumenti, ma veri e propri cambi di accordi, riff ecc ecc, non ho gradito però la revisione dei testi, privati per motivi di censura di tutte quelle espressioni che valgono ai Korn il bollino Parental Advisory Explicit Content, censure forti in alcuni brani, meno evidenti in altri.
Non voglio tediarvi ancora con questa mia lunghissima introduzione e passiamo alle tracce e al concerto vero e proprio. Si apre questo nuovo album dei Korn con il classico dei classici: "Blind" ha la sua solita introduzione cupa ma dopo che Davis ha sussurrato "Are You Ready?" la canzone si trasforma in un vero e proprio rock/flamenco grazie ai salti delle percussioni, molto buono il nuovo lavoro delle chitarre e le nuove parti musicali, tra le migliori dell'intero show. Si continua con "Hollow Life", la melodica canzone tratta da "Untauchables" è ben interpretata da Zac Baird mentre Davis canta con una voce dolce e posata, dopo "Hollow Life" c'è il primo ospite su "Freak On A Lesh": Amy Lee, la graziosa cantante degli Evanescence, da sempre grande fan dei Korn, ancora si distingue il grande Zac al piano e un Munky in forma, la Lee dà molto di suo al corpo della song facendola propria (anche se a lei avrei preferito Corey Taylor degli Stone Sour che ha collaborato su "Freak On A Lesh" durante il Family Values 2006), si fa notare l'arraggiamento degli archi, nel finale al posto dei soliti rantoli senza senso c'è una interpretazione di Amy Lee molto emozionante, ma un po' fuori luogo siccome "evanescensizza" troppo la song.
Un'altro grande classico con "Falling Away From Me" reinterpretata in un dark/pop rock ballabile ma allo stesso tempo mantiene tutta la cupezza e in un certo senso la durezza del brano, grazie al buon lavoro delle percussioni. Tipico degli Unplugged è suonare delle cover olre a pezzi propri (ad esempio i Nirvana coverizzarono Bowie e gli Alice In Chains suonarono l'intro di "Enter Sandman" dei Metallica), i Korn si tuffano accompagnati da un'armonica in una dolcissima ed emotiva cover di "Creep" dei Radiohead, dove Davis fa un lavoro straordinario soprattutto nel ritornello per una delle più belle canzoni dell'alternative e del rock in generale, una canzone che schiuderebbe il cuore a chiunque. Da qui inizia la seconda parte dello show più incentrato sul recente "See You On The Other Side" e viene reinterpretata magistralmente uno dei capolavori di quell'album, ovvero "Love Song" (dove è evidente la già citata censura del testo), che da industrial song è stata trasformata in un'ottima canzone di melodic rock con l'ennesimo ottimo lavoro pianistico. Con "Got The Life" si torna su lidi crossover con uno scatenato Fieldy e un Davis che rispolvera un po' di cattiveria. L'interpretazione del singer nella successiva "Twisted Transistor" non è male ma il nuovo arraggiamento con i tromboni è di cattivo gusto, quella meno bella di tutto lo show, intensa la versione di "Coming Undone", già buona in studio, qui con il suo andamento cadenzato e secco e per il discreto lavoro dei taiko drums fa la sua degna figura, carini gli inserimenti degli archi.
Un'altra chicca del concerto acustico dei Korn è il mix tra "Make Me Bad", cupa canzone korniana tratta da "Issues" e "In Between Days", canzone dei The Cure che si rivelano i secondi ospiti, Robert Smith canta i cori in "Make Me Bad" e Davis lo supporta nel ritornello di "In Between Days", interessante è la parte finale della performance dove si incrociano le due canzoni, un po' confusionario ma d'effetto. Il disco si conclude con "Throw Me Away", molto epica e intensa soprattutto per il buon ritornello e per il bellissimo suono delle percussioni giapponesi, canzone carica di melodia e incorniciata sullo sfondo da archi, emozionanti gli echi di Jhonatan nella parte finale.
I Korn dopo varie scelte, alcune anche molto criticabili, sono giunti dopo 13 anni di carriera a registrare una puntata di Mtv Unplugged, uno show che ha tre parole d'ordine: rock, melodia ed emozione! Un album destinato ai fan della band, ma che può piacere anche a chi i Korn non li ha mai ascoltati, è consigliato quindi a tutti gli ascoltatori di musica rock.

Far suonare ai Korn un concerto Unplugged è come mettere la nutella su un bel piatto di maccheroni: non c'entra un cazzo!
Questo disco è orrendo e un insulto a tutti i fan (e sono milioni sparsi nel mondo) del gruppo.
