Nel 1977 i Led Zeppelin ripresero l'attività live, dopo più di un anno di assenza dovuto all'incidente di Plant, con l'undicesimo tour statunitense. I concerti ebbero un successo enorme dovunque (in Michigan ci furono addirittura 76.000 spettatori, il record di maggiore influenza ad un concerto di un solo gruppo) ma le cose cominciarono a non girare per il verso giusto. Page, strafatto di eroina, ha un colasso in scena; Grant e Bonham vengono arrestati per aggressione a un addetto alla sicurezza e il 26 luglio muore Karac, il figlioletto di Plant colpito da una violenta infezione gastrica. Il tour viene subito interrotto e, in un periodo così buio, gli Zep tentano di scuotersi facendo l'unica cosa che li possa aiutare: un nuovo album.
Nel 1978 cominciano così le registrazioni per il nono disco dei Led Zeppelin, "In Through The Out Door". Il risultato però è veramente deludente e per certi aspetti desolante: rammarica che gli Zep ci abbiano lasciato con un album così brutto (sicuramente il peggiore della loro discografia), a volte addirittura imbarazzante. Il lavoro mette in risalto Jones, che oltre a comporre gran parte delle canzoni e a essere l'autore degli arrangiamenti, qui assume il ruolo di 'leader' del gruppo. Spiace però che sfrutti quest'occasione male, anzi malissimo. Eppure dal pezzo di apertura dell'LP, "In The Evening", non sembra di avere in mano un album così brutto, anzi, l'inizio è promettente. Il brano è sontuoso, epico, caratterizzato dal riff ossessivo e maestoso di Page, che piazza poi uno dei suoi migliori assolo. I sintetizzatori di Jones conferiscono al pezzo mistero, tensione e drammaticità, aumentandone il fascino. La prestazione di Plant è grinta allo stato puro, come d'altronde anche quella degli altri tre. Dopo un brano così energico in puro stile Zeppelin, arriva la prima sorpresa: "South Bound Saurez" è un brano rock'n roll dall'atmosfera scanzonata ma molto banale, in cui l'allegro piano di Jones e il canto passionale di Plant non bastano a riscattare una proposta abbastanza scialba come questa.
Dopo questo brano, che già comincia a lasciare perplessi, tutto crolla prima con "Fool In The Rain", pezzo dalle influenze reggae in cui tutt'a un tratto sbuca fuori una sezione di samba (anche se non è un brano così sgradevole come può sembrare) e poi con "Hot Dog", un pezzo rockabilly-country veramente irritante, in cui Page mette un assolo che fa ridere i polli. Si arriva poi alla peggiore canzone della discografia dei Led: "Carouselambra" è un supplizio di sintetizzatori di 10 minuti. La canzone è estremamente confusa, noiosa e anche imbarazzante, perché punta a essere qualcosa di epico come le grandi maratone degli Zeppelin ("Kashmir", "Starway", "In My Time Of Dying", "Achilles Last Stand", "No Quarter", "Dazed & Confused") ma manca completamente l'obbiettivo. In un guazzabuglio del genere perfino "All My Love", un melanconico brano pop, appare un capolavoro. L'interpretazione vocale di Plant è ottima e anche l'assolo di Jones alla tastiera è molto carino. Tuttavia si tratta solo di una buona canzone e nulla di più.
Per concludere si ritorna quindi all'amato blues in "I'm Gonna Crawl", un pezzo molto rilassato. Qui Page ritrova l'ispirazione e anche Plant (sicuramente il migliore dei 4 in tutto il disco) canta su buonissimi livelli. Nonostante non sia fantastico, il brano appare almeno discreto e godibile. Quando l'album fu pubblicato, il 15 agosto 1979, sbancò letteralmente: in meno di una settimana era già al primo posto nelle classifiche di vari paesi e in 10 giorni vendette 2 milioni di copie. Si diceva che il disco avesse addirittura salvato l'industria discografica americana, allora in fase di stagnazione. Purtroppo le vendite non rispecchiano il reale valore del disco. Con "In Through The Out Door" gli Zep si dimostrano aperti al cambiamento e alle tendenze dell'epoca; tuttavia per "essere alla moda" perdono molto in quanto a qualità dei brani, caratterizzati dalla massiccia presenza di sintetizzatori. I Led si resero conto di questo e Page disse:
"Quando ascolto "All My Love" penso: non siamo noi, non siamo noi. Io e Bonzo abbiamo già cominciato a discutere sul nuovo album, che avrà un impostazione rock più decisa. Sarà sicuramente più interessante"Allora però nessuno sapeva che non ci sarebbe più stato il tempo per realizzarlo.

Mi viene da piangere quando commento questo disco.
Se qualcuno conosce i Led Zeppelin intendendo 'Stairway To Heaven', sicuramente quando ascolterà questa schifezza non dirà che gli sembrano i Led Zeppelin.

Bonzo è colui che salva l'intero album, sfoggiando sempre un grande suono ed una grande tecnica maturata col tempo.
Così finisce il viaggio del Dirigibile... un lavoro sperimentale che ci lascia un pò perplessi ma segnala una rinascita artistica.

All My Love è probabilmente il vertice emotivo di In Through The Out Door.
