4 agosto 1975: Robert Plant in vacanza a Cipro è coinvolto in uno spaventoso incidente stradale con la moglie e i figli, e si rompe la caviglia sinistra. È costretto quindi sulla sedia a rotelle, e anche i tempi di riabilitazione non sono brevi. Così le date restanti del decimo tour statunitense dei Led Zeppelin vengono tutte cancellate. Page decide quindi di utilizzare il tempo morto per la realizzazione di un nuovo album e raggiunge Plant in convalescenza a Malibu per la stesura delle canzoni, mentre Jones e Bonham tornano dalle loro famiglie. Perciò gli apporti compositivi del bassista e del batterista sono praticamente nulli: ecco perché "Presence" risulta essere il disco più imperniato sulla chitarra di qualsiasi altro album dei Led: è infatti Page che compone tutte le canzoni, ad eccezione dei testi, scritti, come di consueto, da Plant.
Il primo brano dell'album è "Achilles Last Stand", l'ultimo vero grande capolavoro degli Zep. Qui tutti e quattro i musicisti spingono le loro doti fino al limite: Bonham sfodera la migliore prestazione della sua carriera rendendo la sua batteria esplosiva; Plant urla e strepita nonostante sia su una sedia a rotelle, sfoderando una prestazione vocale eccezionale; Jones dimostra ancora una volta la sua incredibile solidità ritmica al basso e Page sbalordisce creando una muraglia di sovraincisioni di chitarre e pennellando un assolo memorabile, forse il migliore della sua carriera, con quello di "Starway To Heaven" e di "Since I've Been Loving You". "Achilles Last Stand" è un fenomenale hard-rock che colpisce per intensità e potenza e il testo di Plant con riferimenti alla mitologia greca contribuisce a dare a questo brano epicità. Il secondo pezzo è "For Your Life", una bella canzone caratterizzata dal riff crudo e lacerante di Page che la rende appiccicosa e ossessiva, mentre Plant canta una storia di droga senza girarci troppo attorno. Si prosegue con "Royal Orleans", un brano funky piuttosto tirato veramente trascurabile per poi arrivare all'altro capolavoro di "Presence": "Nobody's Fault But Mine", un rock-blues introdotto dalla minacciosa chitarra di Page con cui poi duetta Plant ripetendo una frase indolente e ipnotica, che sfocia poi nel vigoroso riff magistralmente sostenuto dal fenomenale lavoro ritmico di Jones e Bonham e all'assolo prima di Plant con l'armonica e poi di Page con la sua Les Paul. Il brano da cui gli Zep presero ispirazione per scrivere questa canzone è un vecchio blues di Blind Willie Johnson. Ma subito dopo questo brillante episodio i Led ricadono in basso con "Candy Store Rock", un banalissimo pezzo rock'n roll anni '50 che Page e soci si sarebbero potuti risparmiare. Si arriva quindi a "Hots On For Nowhere" un allegro e delizioso brano dal ritmo funcheggiante che risulta molto godibile, dopodiché per concludere l'album i Led decidono di ritornare alle origini, e in particolare alla loro principale fonte di ispirazione: il blues. "Tea For One" è un blues lento in Do minore, che tenta di riprendere l'altro fantastico blues, sempre in Do minore, di "III", "Since I've Been Loving You". Tuttavia l'intento non riesce: "Tea For One" regala veramente poche emozioni e risulta essere un pezzo piuttosto 'stanco': lo stesso Page dirà che "Tea For One" è stata l'unica volta in cui i Led ripeterono sé stessi.
Registrato in soli 18 giorni, "Presence" già prima della sua pubblicazione, il 31 marzo del 1976, aveva ottenuto il disco di platino con le sole prenotazioni. Tuttavia l'album non rimase al primo posto nelle classifiche a lungo, sia perché penalizzato dall'uscita, sempre nel '76, del live "The Song Remains The Same", sia perché effettivamente evidenziava una prima flessione a livello compositivo degli Zep. "Presence" è quindi un buon album, ma non un capolavoro come i precedenti 6 lavori del gruppo. Qui, presi alla sprovvista dall'incidente di Plant, i Led tentano di non darsi per vinti e cercano di dimostrare di essere ancora sé stessi componendo brani molto hard e ripercorrendo con foga e con poca lucidità le vie intraprese in passato che li avevano resi immortali. Purtroppo il risultato non soddisfa pienamente: ormai declino degli Zep è cominciato, e il dirigibile sta lentamente ma inesorabilmente perdendo quota.

"Achilles Last Stand" è un capolavoro con uno degli assoli più memorabili di Jimmy Page.
La canzone "Candy Store Rock" farebbe vomitare chiunque l'ascolti.

Uno dei tanti motivi per cui i Led sono il mio gruppo preferito in assoluto.
