Japan sono stati un gruppo art-pop/new wave inglese formato nel 1974 a Londra da David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Richard Barbieri e Steve Jansen, con Rob Dean alle chitarre nei primi anni. Dopo due album di impronta glam passarono a suoni più elettronici e sofisticati con Quiet Life (1979), quindi la consacrazione con Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) e Tin Drum (1981). Si sciolsero nel 1982; i membri principali collaborarono nuovamente come Rain Tree Crow nel 1991.
