Il polistrumentista Mike Oldfield, con "Crises" realizza il suo decimo lavoro, che rappresenta anche l'apice della sua lunga carriera. Per la realizzazione di "Crises" infatti Mr. Oldfield si avvale della collaborazione di grandi artisti e colleghi che si inseriscono perfettamente con la loro voce nelle melliflue melodie composte da Oldfield.
Il disco si apre con la lunga (ben 20 minuti e 48 secondi!) title track "Crises" nella quale Oldfield utilizza svariati strumenti tra i quali un mandolino, un fisarmonica ed un "Quantec Room Simulator" il miglior campionatore di suoni esistente all'epoca. Immediatamente dopo la fine della canzone si crea un distacco tra quest'ultima e la famosissima hit pop "Moonlight Shadow" che ci spiazza letteralmente rispetto la premessa d'apertura del disco. L'acuta voce di Maggie Reily accompagna il fantastico duello di chitarre acustiche ed elttriche magistralmente suonate da Mr. Oldfied in persona. Con "In High Places" Oldfield crea un'ambiente d'atmosfera new age nel quale troneggia la mitica voce di Jon Anderson (storico vocalist degli Yes) che con i suoi acuti dal tono effemminato crea un ponte immaginario con "Foreign Affair" (canzone che tra l'altro non appare nella tracklist del cd originale) dove Maggie Reily ripete sempre lo stesso verso mentre la musica procede con il suo lento ma progressivo intreccio. Con "Taurus 3" arriviamo al terzo e conclusivo capitolo di sperimentazione di Oldfield che aveva iniziato con "Taurus" nel suo "QE2" ed aveva continuato con "Taurus 2" in "Five Miles Out". In "Taurus 3" si ripete un giro di chitarra flamenco che ricorda, nelle sonorità e nella tecnica, il mitico disco "Friday Night In San Francisco" di Al di Meola, Paco de Lucia e John McLaughlin.
Infine, per chiudere, il pezzo più rock del cd, intitolato "Shadow on the Wall", è magistralmente cantato da Robert Chapman, ex leader dei Family, che con la sua voce potente ed al contempo tenebrosa intona: "Treat me like an evil, just a shadow on the wall".
Con un giudizio finale questo cd si rivela un piccolo lavoro di sperimentazione che tocca più generi, dal pop al rock, dalla new age al flamenco, senza mai annoiare ma lasciandoci a bocca aperta dalla bravura di questo artista e compositore che, come ricordiamo, all'età di soli 19 anni compose e realizzò, con un orchestra sinfonica, la colonna sonora del film "L'esorcista". Il titolo della colonna sonora e suo debutto era "Tubular Bells", e venne ricavato dal nome dello strumento tubolare e metallico che possiamo ascoltare più di una volta all'interno del cd stesso, il cui suono somiglia molto a quello di una campana.

I 20 minuti della suite d'apertura passano via senza neanche accorgersene.
Mike Oldfield è il polistrumentista più rappresentativo del ventennio '70-'80.

Quanto ho ascoltato quel disco in quei mesi, e pur non amando il prog. questo disco mi piacque subito tutto e mi faceva sognare.
