Era il 2002. Gli Oasis si erano appena ripresi dal crollo che avrebbe dovuto portarli ad una fine prematura. Eppure "Be Here Now" non era affatto male, nonostante Noel Gallagher lo definisca orribile. Decisero allora di cambiare rotta e partorirono "Standing On The Shoulder of Giants" a tutti gli effetti disco di passaggio; Perchè per gli Oasis si stava per aprire un altra via altrettanto luminosa: La verità è che nei primi dieci anni del secolo i nostri hanno dato alle stampe due capolavori. Questo "Heathen Chemistry" è a un passo dall capolavoro assoluto della band ovvero "Don't Believe The Truth". Le canzoni sono molto corpose, piene di chitarre robuste. Quello che colpisce in questo disco, come anche più in " Don't Believe..." é la capacità di "evocare". Gli Oasis hanno sempre evocato: dal farsi la barba davanti allo specchio di "Definitely Maybe" alle sbronze di "(What's the Story) Morning Glory", alla passeggiata lungo un muro graffittato con la persona amata di "Wonderwall". In " Heathen Chemistry" c'è l'evocazione delle vecchie fabbriche, di un mondo operaio che sta scomparendo; Poco inporta se il discio inizia allegramente con "The Hindu Times", c'è "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" che lo riporta in carreggiata. Pare di vedere muri graffittati, tubi gocciolanti, ma anche una voglia di rinascita. Questa rinascita si chiama "Little By Little" il vertice dell'album, la canzone meglio costruita dell'album. C'è da dire che quest'album cede leggermente e questo gli impedisce di essere un capolavoro. Si tratta di un pezzo "Born On a Different Cloud" dove Liam Gallagher imita John Lennon... Gli Oasis non hanno nulla a che fare con i Beatles! E' musica evocativa che non ha nulla a che fare con i surrealismi dei quattro di Liverpool. Liam doveva evitare di inserire quel pezzo e l'album sarebbe stato perfetto. Pazienza. Concludendo siamo di fronte a un album che riesce a unire il gusto per la grande musica ad una dimensione evocativa consolidata nel successivo album.
