Cos?è The Wall?
The Wall è lo sfogo di Roger Waters maturato tra la perdita del padre durante la IIª Guerra Mondiale e il logoramento del suo amico Syd Barrett durante il suo breve periodo di fama.
The Wall non deve essere considerato esclusivamente come un album ma è un'opera che ha trovato nella musica il migliore canale per esprimere le paure, le difficoltà e i limiti di un?artista che, dopo lo sputo dato ad un fan a Montreal, si rende conto che ormai è sorta una specie di muro che impedisce la comunicazione e la comprensione dei sentimenti con il proprio pubblico ma generalmente con le altre persone. Da ricordare che The Wall nel 1982 uscì come film naturalmente l?intera colonna sonora del film erano le canzoni dell?album, ma il film apriva con la bellissima ?When the tigers broke free? (non presente nell?album) dove Roger dimostra il proprio disprezzo nei confronti della guerra raccontando lo scenario della morte del padre avvenuta ad Anzio ed il dolore che lui prova a non averlo mai visto.
Musicalmente parlando The Wall non è il massimo dei Pink Floyd anche perché non ci non ci sono più i veri Pink Floyd . Infatti in quest?album la quasi totalità delle canzoni sono scritte da Waters, tranne tre scritte con Gilmour, una di queste è la struggente Confortably Numb che era una canzone scartata dall?album solista di Gilmour e poi riadattata per The Wall con il contributo di Waters; vi è anche una canzone scritta da Ezrin.
Anche per quanto riguarda la musica vi è il predominio di Waters. C?è da dire che Wright appare come session man mentre il nome di Mason non appare mai nell?album. Dunque l?album può essere definito come un album di Roger Waters con arrangiamenti a cura dei Pink Floyd, ormai sono anni che i PF hanno lasciato da parte il rock psichedelico e le matte quanto eccitanti suite per dare libero sfogo ai testi di un Waters sempre malinconico nel ricordo del padre, testi che trattano dello stato d?animo di una rock star che presa dai problemi e dalle paure è sempre costretta a continuare lo spettacolo.
L?album secondo me è eccezionale perché le canzoni per poter essere veramente apprezzate devono essere sentite nel contesto dell?album e non singolarmente; un esempio può essere "the thin ice": questa canzone inizia con il pianto di un bambino che esce così dal nulla dopo il baccano creato da un aereo di guerra. Sono queste piccolezze che rendono quest?album così toccante, per non parlare del grido di "Comfortably numb" che si miscela benissimo con la canzone, l?elicottero che è ormai simbolo dei Pink Floyd come ingegneri del suono, tutto ciò fa di uno sfogo una grande opera musicale ma anche sociale.
Un consiglio che vi posso dare è quello di sentire The Wall per intero con accanto le traduzioni dei testi perché soltanto così vi renderete conto del genio di Roger Waters.

Una mastodontica opera di classic rock formato doppio lp, che di rock in realtà non ne contiene molto ma è farcita di seriosità come Alienazione e Depressione.
Il risultato finale è una noiosissima e incolore accozzaglia di trito hard rock da stadio, disco music di seconda mano e finto cabaret anni 30.

È impossibile non farlo. Credo che ognuno di noi possa immedesimarsi in Pink, il protagonista di questa opera, nelle sue crisi, nei suoi stati d’animo.
Mentre ascolti le note dell’assolo ti sollevi da terra... per ricominciare poi con la strofa, con i suoi effetti, le sue musiche, perfettamente in sintonia.
