Voto: Prima di tutto, vorrei sottolineare un punto davvero importante. Ogni volta che recensisco o faccio la classifica degli album di una band, lo faccio perché si basa sulle mie opinioni personali, perché ascolto quell’album in quel modo e significa qualcosa per me. Quindi se le tue scelte sono diverse, va assolutamente bene. Se non ti piacciono gli album che sto recensendo, ricorda che non cambierai mai la mia opinione su di essi. È un disco controverso? Se lo è e a me piace, non significa che debba piacere anche a te così come piace a me.
Chiarito questa cosa, lasciatemi entrare nella recensione di questo fantastico album degli anni Ottanta. A Kind Of Magic è stato pubblicato nel 1986. Non mi vergogno a dire che è uno dei miei album dei Queen preferiti in assoluto di sempre. La verità è che, secondo me, questo disco è davvero un capolavoro da non saltare mai. Ci sono tanti aspetti classici in questo disco.
L’album si apre con One Vision, una delle più grandi tracce dei Queen. Se hai il doppio album Live At Wembley, noterai che questa canzone viene suonata proprio all’inizio del concerto. È un classico assoluto hard rock ispirato al discorso I Have A Dream di Martin Luther King.
Poi abbiamo A Kind Of Magic, la straordinaria title track. Una traccia davvero fantastica. Mi piace davvero molto. L’unica cosa che non mi piace più ti tanto è il videoclip della canzone, anche se è assolutamente divertente da vedere. Se possiedi la 2011 Remastered Deluxe Edition (quella che contiene 2 CD, il secondo è il Bonus EP), potrai ascoltare una versione alternativa di questa traccia: secondo me questa versione più orientata agli anni ’80 è molto meglio di quella presente nell’album originale.
Ecco che arriva One Year Of Love. Bellissima ballata con un assolo di sax in perfetto stile "late night" suonato da Steve Gregory. Questa canzone doveva avere un assolo di chitarra elettrica (o acustica) di Brian May, ma mentre stavano registrando questa traccia Brian May e John Deacon stavano avendo una piccola discussione, così il bassista John Deacon, che ha scritto questa splendida traccia, ha optato per il solo di sax. Inutile aggiungere che Freddie Mercury offre una performance vocale assolutamente fantastica qui.
Segue Pain Is So Close To Pleasure: una traccia classica. C’è davvero tanto qui dentro: tastiere incredibili, grandi armonie e uno splendido lavoro di chitarra di Brian May.
Friends Will Be Friends, la quinta canzone dell’album, è una canzone pop davvero stupenda. Non ho molto altro da aggiungere, perché se ti aspetti una lacrima che scorre sulla guancia, eccola lì!
Who Wants To Live Forever. Questo è un classico di altissimo livello. Traccia assolutamente fantastica. Lavoro strepitoso di Brian May e incredibile interpretazione da parte di Freddie.
Gimme The Prize (Kurgan’s Theme). Traccia micidiale. Veramente potente. Colpisce davvero forte. Grande performance della band al completo. Bellissimo lavoro artistico. È metal? Forse no, ma è senza dubbio una canzone tosta che spacca più dei classici brani hard/art/pop rock che troviamo nei precedenti album.
Don’t Lose Your Head. Canzone dal grande stile anni ‘80 con delle batterie ancora più pesanti. In realtà questa traccia non mi dispiace affatto.
Princess Of The Universe. Una fantastica canzone hard rock della band. Davvero potente.

La piena rinascita dei Queen avviene nel 1986, anno in cui vede la luce "A Kind Of Magic".
"Who Wants To Live Forever" è un capolavoro di grande spessore e profondità.
