Se pensate che i Queen siano quelli di Another One Bites The Dust e Radio Gaga siete davvero fuori strada: ascoltate questo capolavoro assoluto e ve ne renderete conto: "Queen II" è un disco pieno di hard rock e atmosfere barocche, surreali e fiabesche, che insieme al quasi altrettanto stupendo disco di debutto costituisce la più grande opera di questa controversa band.
Il disco si apre con la solenne intro strumentale Procession (da notare come gli Iron Maiden abbiano ripreso l'idea per The Ideas Of March) che sfocia nell'hard rock barocco e trascinante di father To Son, che è un po' la summa del suond queeniano delle origini, con le sovraincisioni e gli intecci vocali che mandano la canzone a livelli eccelsi. Da notare anche il complesso ed elaborato assolo di chitarra. Father To Son sfuma nel finale e si trasforma della struggente ballata White Queen, sofferta e passionale ma nello stesso tempo onirica, con una prestazione intensissima del grande Freddie Mercury. Some Day One Day invece è una ballata folk cantata dal chitarrista Brian May (un po' moscio in questa circostanza) senza infamia nè lode. Meglio The Loser In The End, dove il batterista canterino Roger Taylor alza il livello di questo bell'hard-rock con un testo ironico e agro-dolce. Qui finisce il buon White Side e inizia il magnifico Black Side, che si apre con il riffone distorto di Ogre Battle, coronata da un Freddie Mercury davvero epico e ispirato, che racconta appunto di una battaglia di orchi, intoducendo così nel disco il tema fiabesco.
The fairy Feller's Master Stroke è davvero una cannonata, magico inteccio di sovraincisioni e atmosfere visionarie che evoca strani personaggi che provengono da chissà quale mondo parallelo. Nevermore è una stupenda, intensa e irripetibile "ballata tascabile" (gli stessi Queen proveranno a fare qualcosa di simile nel successivo disco "Sheer Heart Attack" con Dear Friends e il risultato sarà una totale ciofeca) che prelude a The March Of The Black Queen, ispiratissima, schizzatissima visione ricca di continui cambi di tempo che regalano continue sorprese e non stancano mai, per chiudere con un finale corale mozzafiato. Personalmente la ritengo il capolavoro dei Queen, ancora più di "Bohemian Rhapsody". Funny How Love Is è meglio saltarla su due piedi per arrivare alla celeberrima cavalcata Seven Seas Of Rhye, che chiude l'album nella maniera più intensa ed epica possibile.
Rimane la rabbia di pensare cosa avrebbe poteto fare una band di simili potenzialità se avesse proseguito su questa strada (anche se a dire il vero tutti i dischi da "Sheer Heart Attack" fino a "Jazz" meritano rispetto e consideriazione).

Descrivere con una misera recensione questo capolavoro è davvero riduttivo, ma cercherò di essere il più intenso possibile.
Il capolavoro dei Queen, canzone poco conosciuta ma forse paragonabile solo alla grandissima Bohemian Rhapsody.
