I Queen esordiscono, discograficamente, nel 1973 con l'album omonimo che non riscuote molto successo di vendite: Roger Taylor, batterista della band, intervistato, disse una volta che "Queen I" era stato un completo crash, un totale fallimento e che la delusione era grande per la poca acclamazione all'album.
Ma la band londinese non si abbatte, non rinuncia al suo sogno di grandezza, quindi torna in studio con nuove idee da convertire in musica. I ragazzi sono intraprendenti, non si sprecano e usano il tempo in modo intelligente, partorendo quelle che secondo me sono le loro migliori canzoni, quelle stesse canzoni che finiranno, nel 1974, nell'album "Queen II". Il loro impegno nella tecnica in studio è testimoniato dalla grande artisticità e bellezza compositiva dei brani del nuovo album. Diviso in White Side e in Black Side, "Queen II" è un capolavoro ambiguo, dalle molteplici sfumature, da un'ammirabile miscela di stili, perfetto negli arrangiamenti, nella struttura e nello scorrere, fluido, della musica.
Esiste un divario tra White e Black Side, come i titoli suggeriscono: il primo lato è più candido, più "romantico", luminoso, pieno di voglia di vivere e di amare. Possono essere definite progressive "Father to son" e "White Queen (As It Began)", cavalcate glam - hard rock, tipicamente romantiche, cariche di emotività.
"Some Day One Day" è trascurabile rispetto alle altre. A chiudere il White Side giunge perentoria "The loser in the end", unica composizione, hard rock, di Roger Taylor chiaramente in contrapposizione con le precedenti composizioni firmate Brian May, chitarrista della band.
Il meglio deve ancora venire!
Con "Ogre Battle" si apre il lato aggressivo dell'album, il lato più ambiguo, più oscuro, più perverso di Queen II.
Formata interamente da brani scritti dal leader carismatico Mercury, la seconda parte dello show è intrisa di sonorità marcatamente hard rock, con qualche concessione al soft rock di "Nevermore" e "Funny How Love Is".
Superlativo è il terzultimo brano della scaletta, "The March of the Black Queen", un capolavoro nel capolavoro, una delle migliori composizioni dei Queen, se non la migliore, una dichiarazione di intenti, un concentrato di stili variegati con sovra-incisioni e assemblaggi superbi, il pezzo che può essere definito, senza dubbio alcuno, progressive.
A chiudere il pretenzioso "Queen II" compare "Seven Seas of Rhye", pezzo di cui Freddie Mercury si riterrà sempre fiero, un pezzo esclusivamente suo,di sua propria mano, con quel meraviglioso e trasportante assolo di pianoforte, veloce e coinvolgente. Il 1974 è l'anno che segna un passo verso la completa maturazione del gruppo a livello musicale, maturazione che si dirà completata con "A Night at the Opera", l'anno seguente.

Descrivere con una misera recensione questo capolavoro è davvero riduttivo, ma cercherò di essere il più intenso possibile.
Il capolavoro dei Queen, canzone poco conosciuta ma forse paragonabile solo alla grandissima Bohemian Rhapsody.
