I Therion, sono una band stupefacente, e questo lo sanno anche i sassi. Chiunque li ami, lo fa in maniera totale e completa, senza nessun dubbio di sorta; chi invece li ascolta, magari solo distrattamente, non può che constatare l'enorme virtù compositiva di una band tra le più originali di tutti i tempi e di qualsiasi genere si voglia porre in esame.
Che siano anche dei "vulcani", in quanto a composizioni lunghe ed intricate, pure lo si conosce, ma mai immaginare che avessero mai potuto pubblicare, non dico due album in un anno, che già di suo sarebbe stata un'impresa titanica, visti i contenuti, ma addirittura insieme, è davvero incredibile, e questo, anche alla luce del fatto che sia "Lemuria", sia "Sirius B" sono due lavori davvero irriproducibili in quanto a composizione sublime e qualità eccelsa. Se poi si considera pure che i due album non lasciano nulla al caso, ma sono magistralmente composti, magnificamente arrangiati, profondi, interessanti ed affascinanti nei testi, curati nei minimi particolari in quanto ad artwork (a dire la verità io non ho mai visto dei libretti di cd tanto belli e tanto variegati), e soprattutto che si avvalgono di una orechestra come la Filarmonica di Praga al completo, allora, già questo basterebbe per fare intendere a chi legge che, indubbiamente, ci troviamo di fronte a due capolavori nel senso "puro" del termine, senza che ci si debba vergognare a dirlo e senza nessun altra remore.
"Lemuria", il cd tanto per intenderci, con la copertina dal colore blu, è la prima parte di questa enorme e mastodontica "suite", chiamiamola pure così. Ha in esso tutti i tratti salienti dei Therion e a cui i Therion ci hanno abituato, con in più un salto di qualità enorme ed abissale rispetto ai lavori precedenti, visto che, tutte le canzoni non sono state registrate "effettandole" poi con meccanismi elettronici, ma tutto quello che si sente, è tutta opera di un circolo di musicisti che per l'occasione (e anche grazie ai mezzi messi a disposizione dalla casa discografica) sono più di 110. I brani di "Lemuria" sono appassionati e ispirati persino per quanto riguarda i minimi dettagli, aggiungendo a tutto quanto fino a quì detto, una dose massiccia di Heavy Metal composto "da manuale" ed eseguito ancora meglio.
Esempi? "Typhon" che, con i suoi richiami ad un certo qual goticismo raffinato e decadente, per contralto ha un growl effettato e feroce a narrare le parti salienti di questa dinamica (e bellissima) canzone. Ma non è solo il primo brano a lasciare a bocca aperta: "Uthark Runa" con il suo testo misterioso e debordante, e poi, e poi, le due parti di "Three Ships of Berik" che, nel loro incedere maestoso e marziale miscelano dinamicità e parti orchestrali di arcane marce militari delle armate ostrogote. I due brani, in sé, narrano le gesta di Berik, leggendario generale gotico che discese le fredde lande scandinave pagane verso l'Impero Romano all'epoca, già cristiano, per conquistarlo. E se si chiudono gli occhi, davvero si riesce a immaginare la grande orda barbarica con le proprie navi, gli uomini pronti alla guerra, le grida di battaglia, le urla e i canti di trionfo, le gesta eroiche di un popolo guerriero che, dalla sua nascita, ha conquistato terre e Imperi, ha egemonizzato mezza Europa e forse anche qualche parte d'America (gli storici in tal senso sono in disaccordo). Incredibile.
Incredibile il crogiuolo di emozioni e sensazioni deliziose e fantastiche che i Therion in questi due brani riescono a trasmettere. Poi, in prosecuzione, altre storie, come quelle di "Lemuria", il continente magico e misterioso che ha ispirato alla band l'altra colonna di quest'album, che inizia con accordi acustici strappati ad una struttura triste e "bohémien", per ricadere in certi liquidi universi scuri e magniloquenti, "The Dreams of Swedenborg", in classico stile "Therion", con quel particolarissimo suono delle chitarre a metà strada tra il potente e graffiato, e il malinconico e decadente. Non mi dilungherò più. Come per le migliori opere, per i migliori libri, per tutte quante le più belle cose, occorre che ognuno scopra per conto suo, mano mano, quali siano i punti che più toccano la propria sensibilità.
Io mi sono limitato ad elencare e a cercare di descrivere i miei, forse risultando prolisso, non so, ma come si fa a non versare fiumi d'inchiostro per tali gioielli uno più bello dell'altro?

L'album vive di una forza incessabile direi quasi divina, grazie anche al fattore compositivo realizzato in maniera impeccabile.
Therion ci dimostrano di essere una delle band più esilaranti e sconvolgenti nel panorama musicale mondiale.
