Per me è un fatto inusuale parlare di Marc Almond e dei Soft Cell.

Non ho mai prestato attenzioni né sprecato lodi verso la proposta proposta del "dandy" più noto e tormentato della new wave.

Non ho nemmeno ascoltato con attenzione la discografia dell'enigmatico singer e del gruppo da lui presieduto.

Conosco il primo album dei Soft Cell, certo, ma poco altro.

Fortuna ha voluto che, spulciando tra vecchi vinili, ho scovato una copia di questo "This Last Night In Sodom" album che, fin dalla copertina, mi ha incuriosito in senso positivo.

Cosa aspettarmi, allora, dagli autori di "Tainted Love" nella fase più matura di quella che fu la loro carriera? E' bastato mettere il vinile sul piatto, ascoltarlo senza pretese e senza facili entusiasmi per capirlo.

Sono lontani i ritmi "easy" di inizio carriera e le maliziose quanto orecchiabili litanie. Non ci troviamo di fronte ai Throbbing Gristle o a qualche altra diabolica formazione, certo, però è notevole il cambiamento operato da Almond (autore principale dell'opera). Permangono gli elementi "ambigui" e femminei di sempre ma, nella sua integrità, il disco propone quadri di desolazione morbosamente costruiti. Ritmi synth-pop, come prevedibile, accompagnati da testi decisamente negativi e dall'inserimento di voci, rumori e sibilii ben poco armonici.

Qui c'è spazio per la sensualità, per la ricerca (disperata!) del "bello" e per le suggestioni notturne. Non è possibile però trascurare il lato più inquieto e tormentato che il nostro ha voluto affibiare all'ultimo album dell'entità Soft Cell.

Roxy Music e New Order si incontrano in un sound ballabile e semi-industriale. Ma in questo caso, aspetto fondamentale, troverete anche una pesante percentuale di ansia, di perplessità e di smarrimento di fronte a un mondo che non presenta quasi più nulla di avvincente. Tutto cominciava in quel periodo e tutto è ancora lontano dall'esaurirsi!

Il coito ridotto a surrogato dell'esistenza e della comunicazione quotidiana. La cosiddetta perversione concepita come unica via d'uscita da una sistema opprimente, alienante e arido. C'è anche spazio per una riflessione sull'omicidio (ovviamente non in tono apologetico).

Si respira un'aria malsana e non è difficile immaginare "This Last Night In Sodom" come album della maturità e del disincanto.

Ho particolarmente apprezzato brani come "Mr. Self Destruct", "The Best Way To Kill" e "Surrender To A Stranger".

Ma il disco si fa amare per la sua originalità e per la sua drammatica franchezza.

Insomma: FORSE inizierò ad apprezzarli dall'ultimo loro parto!
