Pubblicato nel 1995 l'album d'esordio "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot" Sparklehorse (moniker sotto cui si cela Mark Linkous) pubblica l'anno successivo l'EP "Chords I've Known", da molti ingiustamente trascurarato.
L'EP si può considerare come un'integrazione del primo album per la presenza di outtake di "Viviadixie". "Heart Of Darkness (Wiggly)" è una versione alternativa (più folk) della canzone pubblicata nel primo album, ma si contraddistingue anche per l'uso della chitarra elettrica in sostituzione della chitarra pedal steel. "Almost Lost My Mind" è la traccia più rock del lotto. "Midget In A Junkyard" è strutturata sugli intrecci armonici di banjo e mandolino e ricorda i Lullaby for the Working Class. "Dead Opera Star" è un'interessante commistione di spoken word e cantato tradizionale (nel ritornello). "Chords I've Known" si chiude con "The Hatchet Song", canzone peculiare nella discografia di Linkous per l'utilizzo del pianoforte.
5 tracce per 10 minuti di ottima musica, lasciata in eredità da una delle menti più brillanti degli ultimi vent'anni.

Vedo le canzoni come dei piccoli pianeti, non devono essere in asse, se orbitano diventano noiose.
Si suona musica selvaggia, nuova e cruda.

L'album si apre con 'Homecoming Queen' che ha un arpeggio stupendo, e una voce sussurrata, sognante, malinconica da evitare quando ci si sente giù.
Una voce piena di 'noia adolescenziale' e un sapiente uso del riverbero donano ai pezzi un'aria ipnotica e affascinante.
