Quando nel 1970 viene pubblicato il suo primo vero disco da solista, questo abile chitarrista texano è già da anni una star affermata del rock californiano. Reduce dai gloriosi anni con i Buffalo Springfield, dalle "Super Session" in compagnia di Al Kooper e fresco dal successo planetario ottenuto con David Crosby, Graham Nash e con l'eterno amico-nemico Neil Young, con questo album Stephen Stills non ha più nulla da raggiungere o da dimostrare.
Nonostante la fama raggiunta, la stima di cui gode presso i colleghi e la sua indiscussa abilità come musicista e cantante, Stills non è mai stato considerato dalla critica sullo stesso livello di Neil Young o David Crosby. Dei quattro eroi di Woodstock, Stills è sempre stato quello con l'aura più fragile, il personaggio antipatico che non cristallizzava le buone vibrazioni culturali dell'epoca. Di questi problemi lui però se ne è sempre curato poco convinto di essere sempre stato il più dotato del super-gruppo a livello strumentale, il vero rocker aggressivo. Nonostante queste considerazioni Stills, nel corso di quegli anni, ha saputo regalare melodie indimenticabili e brani superbi. Le cronache disincantate della classica "For What It's Worth", la calda energia di "Bluebird", gli intrecci chitarristici di "Hung Upside Down", i brividi di "4 + 20" e la malinconia di "Helplessy Hoping" dimostrano che nell'universo musicale di questo bluesman travestito da folk-rocker nulla è fuori posto anche se, come accadrà nel corso della sua controversa carriera, spesso il mestiere renderà accettabili anche le pagine più incerte. Non è il caso di questo suo omonimo album nel quale Stills è aiutato da un gruppo di musicisti importanti che comprende Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Nash, Mama Cass e John Sebastian.
Il disco offre una serie di brani riusciti che vanno dalle armonie elevate di "Do For The Others" al gospel intriso di soul di "Church". L'autore non si scorda della sua grande passione per il blues: elettrico e in compagnia di Clapton in "Go Back Home", acustico e solitario nella famosa "Black Queen". Jimi Hendrix offre la sua chitarra nel funky-rock di "Old Times Good Times" mentre la famosa "Love The One You're With" con i suoi ritmi latini e il suo ritornello pacifista e contagioso, diventa subito un classico e verrà ripresa nel pluridecorato "4 Way Street". Nonostante il tema dell'amore venga abbondantemente trattato nei testi delle dieci canzoni presenti nell'opera, Stills a livello descrittivo e contenutistico non scende mai a fondo nei problemi narrati, preferendo rimanere in superficie e lasciando che siano la forza e la coesione della resa sonora ad emergere. Incapace di toccare nei testi quei tasti emotivi che hanno fatto la fortuna di Young e Crosby, egli preferisce che la parole siano un contorno e uno strumento con cui ottenere una grande efficacia ritmica.
Con il suo riuscito debutto, Stills riesce a emergere singolarmente nel ricco panorama musicale dell'epoca con un disco vibrante e solido che va assolutamente riscoperto.
