Dopo avere ascoltato allo sfinimento "Exit Planet Dust" che ancora oggi suona come nuovo. Dopo avere regalato perché non sopportavo "Dig your Own Hole" con "Black Rockin' Beats" mi faccio prendere in un negozio dal video di "Star Guitar", un viaggio in treno col paesaggio che si modifica al suono della musica. Video e canzone perfetta.
Ma poi la ascolto su cd, mi diverto per la pallina da ping-pong che introduce la canzone, tac-ta-tac, poi sostituita dalla batteria, meraviglia di un secondo, ma il paesaggio è sparito e la canzone non rende come prima. L’altra mattina mi sono svegliato solo quando è partita "It Began in Africa" nel sonno mi piaceva, poi la riascolto ora e non mi convince. Di questo disco non mi convince niente, è formalmente bello, ineccepibile, coi bassi profondi che entrano sui hi-hat che vanno veloci per i fatti loro, ma non c’è una sola canzone per la quale mi venga voglia di scavare nella pila di cd e di metterla su subito, di cui ho bisogno.
Mi rimane in mente per pochissimo solo "The Test" dove canta Richard Achcroft, in una canzone che forse avrebbe dovuto rappresentare la evoluzione che avrebbero potuto prendere i Verve di cui mi viene in mente "It’s All in the Mind". Il primo o il secondo singolo. Ma anche questa non mi costringe ad andare a cercare il disco nel mucchio, anche se quando parte è "quiet impressive".
Poi canta Beth Orton in "The State We’re In", canzone hippie, mi aspetto di sentire “hey now what’s that sound, everybody looking what’s going down”. 'Hippiedom' iniziato con "Private Psychedelic Reel" (Dig Your Owm hole) dove cantava lo hippie dei Mercury Rev, Jonathan Donahue. Ma si può fare di meglio con la sua voce. Certo ha parti leggere che girano, come la cosa di "The State…".
Di questo disco non mi rimane niente, anche se ascoltarlo in sottofondo in un bar mi farà piacere. Rispetto, ma non più di quello.

La verità è che non si può resistere a questi due geni, Tom Rowlands ed Ed Simons.
Quindi dopo i 2 milioni di copie di 'Surrender' venduti in giro per il mondo questo è un ottimo seguito, molto meglio dell'ultimo 'Push The Button'.
