Il modo in cui in queste dieci tracce vengono fusi tra loro generi del tutto opposti, è semplicemente stupefacente. Il sound di "Neon golden", secondo lavoro della band tedesca, segna senza dubbio un traguardo notevole, da ammirare per la sua maturità e perfezione che tuttavia non soffocano la freschezza e la spontaneità proprie dei Notwist.
Una morbida base elettronica si alterna a tratti con una batteria rigorosamente indie, chitarre sottili e sfumate vengono amalgamate a campionamenti "Radioheadstyle", il tutto condotto da una voce soffice come un sussurro ad appena un millimetro dalle vostre orecchie. Piazzare una ballata di cinque minuti in apertura potrebbe sembrare un po' azzardato, ma "Consequence" si rivela inaspettatamente una geniale overture che apre le porte all'incantevole "One step inside does'nt mean you understand" e successivamente al frizzante pop di "Pilot".
Poetica come la pioggia in estate, "Pick up the phone" vi farà perdere letteralmente la testa con la sua introduzione da brivido, ma è più in là che si nasconde la perla del disco, "This Room", il pezzo che tutti ci saremmo aspettati da Yorke e company se nel 2000 non si fossero avventurati nella sperimentazione di "Kid A". "One with the freaks" è l'ultima piccola scossa prima di lascire il finale al folk e al post-rock dell'omonima "Neon golden" e "Off the rails". Ottima prova di maturità stilistica e abilità creativa.

La loro formula del “meglio togliere che appesantire” continua a rendere il suono intimo ed accessibile.
Il finale Consequence riassume ed amplifica questa sensazione, con la malinconia che chiude i battenti e consegna ai Notwist la giusta ricompensa.
