I Notwist sono Markus Acher, Micha Acher, Martin Messerschmid e Martin Gretschmann, e sono di Weilheim, una cittadina di 20mila abitanti a 45 chilometri da Monaco.
Dalla stessa Weilheim provengono anche i Tied and Tickled Trio, Village of Savoonga, Potawatomi e i Lali Puna.
Troppe band per una cittadina così piccola? La spiegazione è semplice; sono tutte side projects o band nelle quali sono coinvolti i Notwist stessi o i loro più stretti collaboratori.
Il percorso dei Notwist è iniziato alla fine degli anni ’80 quando suonavano metal è si è evoluto, passando per la cover di "Johnny and Mary" di Robert Palmer del 1993 alla forma attuale. I Notwist producono canzoni per addizione successiva di parti e frammenti cercati con cura, fra campionamenti e chitarre vere riuscendo a sintetizzare una forma totalmente originale.
"Pick up The Phone": un clarinetto, poi un fruscio o stridio di una manopola del volume coi contatti ossidati, campionata che diventa base ritmica, poi una percussione delicata da drum machine analogica. Entra la chitarra; una sola nota su di una sola corda, lenta e inesorabile, poi la voce malinconica e disincantata, rassegnata e ipnotica di Markus Acher. Poi un basso distorto. E il bello è che tutti questi elementi vengono introdotti uno alla volta. Poi risento il clarinetto sprofondato nel mix, ad ogni ascolto si scopre un altro degli innumerevoli strumenti che usano in sottofondo.
Non nascondono fruscii portati dai microfoni, un errore tecnico in teoria, serve invece a dare profondità e atmosfera, trattato come un campionamento. La cura per il dettaglio è maniacale; l’effetto complessivo è minimalista.
Le altre cose bisogna scoprirle e cercarle. "Out With The Freaks" è puro pop per come lo intendo io, e una volta tanto alzano anche il volume; "have you ever been all messed up?".
Un disco intimista, delicato, raccolto in se stesso, che gira su se stesso, che parla di stanze dalle quali non si uscirà più.
E ieri ho passato tutta la giornata a cercare di capire cosa voglia dire "oggi uscirò dal tuo passato". Forse nulla, ma il verso lo ho fatto mio. "You're the colour, you're the movement and the spin..." di "Consequence", anche.

Il modo in cui in queste dieci tracce vengono fusi tra loro generi del tutto opposti, è semplicemente stupefacente.
Poetica come la pioggia in estate, 'Pick up the phone' vi farà perdere letteralmente la testa con la sua introduzione da brivido.

La loro formula del “meglio togliere che appesantire” continua a rendere il suono intimo ed accessibile.
Il finale Consequence riassume ed amplifica questa sensazione, con la malinconia che chiude i battenti e consegna ai Notwist la giusta ricompensa.
