Nel 1970 emerse una band con la voglia di creare un sound che andasse contro le tendenze "Peace and Love" che erano di voga in quegli anni, un sound cupo, oscuro e moderno che costruirà le basi per un genere che ancora oggi è molto seguito: il metal. I Balck Sabbath non suonavano ancora metal, ma piuttosto un hard rock suonato per la prima volta con l'accordatura della chitarra abbassata di un semitono (tecnica utilizzata da una miriade di chitarristi metal) e influenzato dal blues e dalla psichedelica con testi interessati all'occultismo (anche se si dice che l'unico membro del gruppo interessato alla magia nera era Geezer Butler, il bassista). Qui vorrei parlare del quarto lavoro di questo straordinario gruppo. Vol. 4 segna una svolta stilistica nei lavori precedentemente pubblicati dai Black Sabbath. Esce nel 1972 dopo i primi tre lavori che, secondo il mio parere, rimarranno nella storia della musica popolare del '900.
In questo disco si notano delle divergenze rispetto al cupo hard-rock bluseggiante dei primi tre album. In alcuni pezzi, tra l'altro bellissimi, si avverte l'influenza del progressive rock, che tanto si andava diffondendo in quel periodo. Da ricordare, infatti, che Tony Iommi suonò per un breve periodo la chitarra con i Jethro Tull, la famosa band prog rock di Ian Anderson. Fra queste canzoni, Changes è quella in cui si avverte di più il cambio di rotta: la presenza di un pianoforte che accompagna la voce malinconica voce di Ozzy Osbourne che narra la tristezza di un amore perduto. Bellissima anche Wheels of Confusion, soprattutto nel solo finale, che si spegne fra un misterioso eco di chitarra. Non mancano comunque canzoni che si riallacciano alle care vecchie sonorità hard-rock di un tempo, come Tomorrow's Dreams e Supernaut, sempre stupende, ma soprattutto il doom sound caratteristica dello stile chitarristico di Iommi, come in Cornucopia, ma soprattutto in Under the Sun, che a mio parere è il pezzo piu bello dell'album. Si apre con un riff cupissimo, per poi procedere in un altro riff che crea dei cerchi su se stessi, per poi morire in un assolo finale veramente da brivido il tutto condito dalla solita voce potente (allora, non oggi) e stridula allo stesso tempo di Ozzy a consacrare il tutto in un vero capolavoro. Altro pezzo importante è Snowblind , che inizialmente doveva dare il nome all'album, ma i discografici hanno preferito non darglielo per via delle voci nate relative al titolo del pezzo, che si riferirebbe alla cocaina (neve cieca). Comunque il pezzo è davvero bello, un hard-.rock potente e melodico allo stesso tempo. Belle anche l'acustica Laguna Sunrise e St.Vicious Dance, anche se non spiccano fra le altre.Non sarà un album tanto acclamato ma è uno dei miei dischi preferiti, fra i migliori della discografia dei Sabbath.

Il termine che può descrivere questo disco è "discontinuo": le due tipologie di brani fanno molta fatica ad integrarsi.
Le sperimentazioni di Iommi sono incomplete e confuse, aborti musicali lasciati a metà che non mi hanno convinto.
