Tagliamo la testa al toro e partiamo dalla fine: stavolta i Bullet For My Valentine hanno toppato. L'atteso bis dell'exploit di "The Poison" non si è concretizzato, lasciandoci nelle mani invece un lavoro decisamente sotto gli standard a cui ci avevano abituato e un bel po' di delusione.
Persa la spontaneità e la genuinità del primo capitolo, che lo rendevano personale, nonché con passaggi molto emozionanti e capaci di trasmettare qualcosa all'ascoltatore, la parola d'ordine oggi sembra rinnovamento, che tuttavia sa di involuzione piuttosto, che di maturità e appesantimento (che invece è alleggerimento) del sound, come parlano in molti.
Leggendo per la rete, si può constatare come questa seconda prova dei Gallesi abbia suscitato, non a caso sentimenti contrastanti ai più, non solo a livello di meri giudizi positivi e/o negativi, ma anche sull'analisi musicale che ne esce fuori, spesso alle antitesi, come quei giornalisti della domenica, che da una partita sola, ne vedono e descrivono due differenti.
"Scream, Aim Fire" segna il passo dal precedente "The Poison" in maniera netta, l'ordine del giorno è cambiare, abbadonare il sound melodic metalcore per approdare sulle sacre rive del thrash metal old school anni '80. Quindi dimunizione drastica di screaming/growl, a favore di un registro vocale più pulito.
Quello che sulla carta sembra un esperimento stuzzicante, si rivela invece essere alle orecchie un impasto ambiguo e senza continuità di sorta.
Il loro modo di intendere il thrash metal è preso molto alla "marinara". Ne copiano si le strutture ritmiche e armoniche, riff e assoli veloci, ma manca lo spirito, il fascino, la dose di aggressività, che facevano grande gente come i Metallica. In realtà è difficile etichettare un disco del genere 'solo' in un modo. Il thrash qui viene amalgamato con elementi heavy/power e hair metal e con qualche rigurgito metal-core, giusto per non dimenticare le loro origini. Un bel calderone.
Andiamo al sodo.
"Scream Aim Fire" - Pezzo veloce e diretto, suoni potenti e ritornello che rifinisce bene l'intelaiatura. Canzone scelta giustamente come singolo di lancio. Curioso il bridge dove si odono gli unici veri cenni di growl dell'intero disco.
"Eye Of The Storm" - Sulla scia della precedente, continua su tonalità thrash. Bene qui le vocals, che riescono a sostenere l'impalcatura, nonostante l'impostazione clean. Decisamente a pro la parte strumentale a metà e i soventi muri di chitarra che ne arrichiscono i contenuti. Miglior episodio del disco.
"Hearts Burst Into Fire" - Qui cominciano i problemi e anche le divagazioni power. Bel intro con un arpeggio spalleggiato prontamente da un assolo, ecco dimenticatevi poi tutto il resto, che rasenta la prostituzione del metal verso le radio.
"Waking The Demon" - Ovvero il risultato dello stupro dei Killswitch Engage ai danni degli Slayer (jam-session?), che si risolve in un pezzo violento, tra doppia cassa vorticosa di Thomas, screaming laceranti e ritornelli lenti à la "Rose of sharyn". Passionale. Se il disco sarebbe tutto su questa linea, sarebbe tutt'un altra storia. Peccato la furia esecutiva del pezzo finisca troppo presto, tornando su coordinate più ordinarie.
"Disappear" - Episodio di transizione, bel background strumentale sopratutto all'inizio, con una discreta parte corale.
"Deliver Us From Evil" - Dei quattro pezzi vagamente più melodici, l'unico salvabile, grazie anche al ritornello soave e ai cori.
"Take It Out On Me" - Come una qualsiasi band thrash metal 80's non suonerebbe. Per carità il pezzo non è brutto, ma la timbrica vocale 'infatile' stona con la pesantezza dell'ottimo riff d'apertura.
"Say Goodnight" - La ballata lenta. Ovvero la riproposizione in chiave moderna di classici come "One" e "Sanitarium". Il risultato finale è un ni, mancando a questa quel fascino e quell'espressività propria della band di Hetfield. La prima parte sarebbe accettabile, peccato venga rovinata da urla fuori luogo nella seconda parte e da un ritornello banale, che non si distingue a tratti dalle strofe.
"End Of Days" - "Last To Know" - Il ritorno al passato che fu. Gli unici due pezzi in cui il cantato urlato assume di nuovo consistenza e vigore nel songwriting e si scorgono gli elementi, che avevano decretato il successo anni fa. Pollice in su, solo per la seconda delle due.
"Forewer And Always" - Imbarazzante. Metal per le arene, in un incrocio indigeribile tra corettini glam tamarri e melodie oscene. Davvero trash. E dura quasi sette minuti, rendendola ancor più pesante. Ci tocca rimpiangere la conclusiava "The End" del disco precedente, nonché le vere perle melodiche passate come "Cries In Vain" e "Tears Don't Fall", qui sostituite dal nulla.
E' chiaro che ci troviamo di fronte ad un cd di transizione, e che lascia aperte molti interrogativi per il futuro, nonché porte e bivi.
Detto questo, nonostante non manchino gli episodi riusciti, il platter è affetto da difetti, anche abbastanza tediosi, che pesano molto sul giudizio finale.
Che fossero una band con un target giovane lo si sapeva già, il che non è un male, se tuttavia si mantiene una logica e coerenza.
Ma qual'è il miglior espediente per garantirsi un largo audience per risultare digeribili alle giovani marmotte e ai college-radio, se non i ripetuti e orecchiabilissimi ritornelli? Ecco, il vero punto debole dell'opera. Refrain spesso fastidiosi e plasticosi, nonché spesso troppo ridondanti, che incidono in maniera negativa sul "consumo" temporale del full-lenght.
Altra nota dolente è la prestazione vocale insoddisfacente di mister Tuck, con una timbrica piatta, nonché infatile e spesso al limite dello zuccheroso. Davvero un peccato, se si pensa, che le parti strumentali ad opera di Micheal Padget e del leader sono ben curate, e con molte parti di chitarra decisamente ispirate e ben suonate (il riffing di "Waking The Demon" è lì a dimostrarlo), che si rincorrono.
In sostanza il punto è questo: thrash nella forma, ma poco nella sostanza, per poterli paragonare anche lontanamene ai Four Horseman. Il paragone più centrato semmai, rimane quello con i Trivium. Con la differenza, che quest'ultimi, sono si passati da un sound più moderno e -core ad uno più classico sul loro "The Crusade", ma con esiti decisamente differenti, rispetto ai Bullet. I Trivium hanno svoltato a 360° gradi, senza troppe storie e sopratutto mettendo da parte melodie troppo a buon mercato e strambe ballate. I Gallesi invece, sembrano indecisi quale strada seguire, se quella di markettari di pentole come spalla al Giorgio Mastrota di turno, o metterci quella grinta, che richiderebbe il genere.
Per il momento il giudizio è sospeso. Sono nel limbo, ora sta a loro fare una scelta.

è innegabile come i nostri suonino potentissimi (d'altronde con Colin Richardson al mixer anche mia nonna che monta i bianchi d'uovo avrebbe un sound boombastico)
Waking the Demon si apre con un riffing a là Machine Head ultima maniera e prosegue bilanciando in maniera ottimale rabbia e melodia

Dategli una chitarra, una batteria, un basso e un'altra chitarra, fategli incidere un po' di rumore ordinato in maniera tale da sembrare lontanamente musica ed avrete uno degli act più sensazionali del secolo.
Se questi sono i risultati, per ora siamo decisamente molto lontani dal traguardo della sufficienza.
