Caravan sono un gruppo progressive rock inglese nato a Canterbury nel 1968 (Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, Richard Coughlan). Tra i principali esponenti del Canterbury Sound, uniscono melodie raffinate, jazz-rock e psichedelia; celebri per l’album In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971) e la suite Nine Feet Underground.

Formazione classica: Pye Hastings (voce/chitarra), Richard Sinclair (voce/basso), David Sinclair (tastiere), Richard Coughlan (batteria); Jimmy Hastings ai fiati come ospite. In the Land of Grey and Pink è uscito su Deram nel 1971 e contiene la suite Nine Feet Underground. Su Waterloo Lily (1972) alle tastiere subentra Steve Miller, accentuando l’impronta jazz-rock.

Dalle recensioni emerge il ruolo centrale dei Caravan nella scena di Canterbury: un progressive melodico che intreccia rock, jazz e psichedelia. In the Land of Grey and Pink (Deram, 1971) è l’opera simbolo, con la suite Nine Feet Underground e la line-up Hastings/R. Sinclair/D. Sinclair/Coughlan (con Jimmy Hastings ai fiati). Applauditi anche If I Could Do It All Over Again (1970), Waterloo Lily (1972, con Steve Miller alle tastiere) e For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (1973). Back to Front (1982) divide, ma resta curato e con il timbro riconoscibile della band.
