NUOVI SUONI DAL FANTASMA TRAVESTITO DI NERO
ovvero "una dannata canzone che possa farmi crollare e piangere"

C'è qualcosa nel mio latte ridacchia David Bowie affondando nel sedile della limousine. L'uomo ha il viso bianchissimo, asciutto ed emaciato, non peserà più di 40 chili e nasconde gli occhi con l'ombra del cappello ben calato sulla chioma rossa scolorita. Mentre la limousine corre tra i deserti americani, David semina i suoi pensieri davanti alla telecamera. Siamo in una zona desolata tra il '74 e il '75, qualche minuto prima il "Cracked Actor" ci ha mostrato come ha chiuso in un baule i suoi costumi da teatro giapponese e le sue maschere col caratteristico fulmine... ora è ancorato al sedile posteriore con qualche sacchetto di cocaina e l'angoscia di essere fermato dalla polizia. C'è qualcosa nel mio latte dice Bowie, scruta nel bicchiere e ci spiega che lui in America è come quella mosca nella sua bevanda: assorbe tutto, e "Young Americans" è una fotografia assolutamente istantanea di come l'artista sta vivendo la musica e di come sta nascondendo la sua vita.

Secondo le parole dell'artista inglese questo sarebbe solo un album di successo per consolidare la mia posizione in quel paese ma secondo me oltre i giri funky, i cori R'n'B e la voce black c'è ben altro. Proprio per questo è stato definito un disco controverso: da un parte solo un album commerciale fatto per scalare le classifiche americane, dall'altro un prodotto di soul music bianca arrangiato in modo raffinatissimo. Sarà che le canzoni sono solo otto, ma di fatto non ce n'è una che stoni o non funzioni. David raccoglie tutte le suggestioni black del "Philly sound" che gli aleggiavano intorno come spettri cocainomani durante il tour di "Diamond Dogs", chiama al suo cospetto grandissimi professionisti tra cui i chitarristi Carlos Alomar ed Earl Slick, il sassofonista David Sanborn e il corista Luther Vandross, e infine si rinchiude ai Sigma Sound Studios di Philadelphia, dove passa letteralmente i giorni e le notti. Da qui chiama anche un certo John Lennon che presta la sua nuova voce nella cover dei Beatles "Across The Universe" e in "Fame". Alla produzione c'è il fidato Tony Visconti, ed è proprio lui a raccontarci che nulla era organizzato, si trasformò in una enorme jam session.

Dimenticatevi ballate spaziali, cabaret weilliano, orchestre aliene e distorsioni hard-blues, e dimenticatevi pure l'immensa cattedrale gotica del precedente lavoro: Bowie si avvia sempre di più verso l'essenza della musica, si concentra solo su questa e lavora in modo maniacale per fare che le melodie e la sua voce rendano il massimo. Non sto a parlarvi dettagliatamente di ogni brano: voglio sfidare chiunque a resistere alla batteria della title-track o ai contagioso ritmo del bassi di "Fascination". Come si può non ancheggiare lentamente quando i sassofoni di "Win" e "Right" diventano sensuali respiri? Ma David Bowie è falso, lo è sempre stato: questo disco è solo la facciata di un palazzo di disperazione, è una facciata che, prima di esplodere con "Station To Station" e la produzione franco-berlinese, talvolta perde l'intonaco e rivela tutto lo straziato e paranoico mondo della psiche dell'artista, e per gettare uno sguardo nell'abisso bastano i falsetti di "Somebody Up There Likes Me". Lo spirito tossico della voce roca e tremante di Bowie in "Across The Universe" pervade tutta questa atmosfera bianca e nera, è come il fumo condensato di un locale gay di Philadelphia, sul cui palco un tiratissimo fantasma trascina la sua voce oltre i cori di "Can You Hear Me". Questo fantasma è stato il primo bianco a partecipare, nel '75, al programma "Soul Train", e, a proposito di fama, è anche tra i primi a denunciare, nell'ultima "Fame", che essa "ti mette lì dove le cose sono false (...) non è il tuo cervello, è solo la fiamma che brucia il tuo cambiamento per mantenerti pazzo (...) quel che ti piace è nella limousine, fama, quello che ottieni è nessun domani". Il futuro Duca Bianco mette finalmente le carte in tavola, ci dice come stanno realmente le cose senza usare maschere e per l'ultima volta esprime emozioni comprensibili all'orecchio umano prima della trasformazione nell'uomo caduto sulla terra, prima della svolta caustica, prima della fuga ... ma questa è un'altra storia, per ora accontentiamoci di "one damn song that can make me break down and cry", accontentiamoci di un soul-boy bianco e magro che, accasciato nella limousine, canticchia "Natural Woman", scorrazza tra le strade di Los Angeles e Philadelphia fuggendo dalla polizia e da se stesso, getta uno sguardo al bicchiere e ci dice "c'è qualcosa nel mio latte"...
