Dopo tre anni anni di silenzio, assenti dai tempi del milionario White Pony del 2000, la band capitanata dal carismatico Chino Moreno è tornata con un lavoro che ha il sapore della riconferma.
Deftones infatti non farà guadagnare altri estimatori alla band ma tenderà a riconfermare la nuova diezione presa dalla stessa, lontana dalla furia di Adrenaline e Around The Fur, verso esposizioni piú melodiche.
Detto questo, credo che sia un gran bel disco, di difficile impatto, dove la chitarra di Stef Carpenter alterna a riff furiosi parti molto soft mettendo in risalto la parte piú introspettiva, supportata dai groove del basso sempre preciso di Chi Cheng e dalla batteria di Abe Cunningham, vero punto di forza per il sound del gruppo con i suoi ritmi serrati e potenti.
Con questi presupposti Chino Moreno fa il bello e il cattivo tempo con la sua voce enfatica ma allo stesso tempo capace di sferzate di rabbia inaudita come avviene in Hexagram o la devastante When Girls Telephone Boys, che ricorda i primi tempi, ma anche nelle melodica Minerva, primo singolo, dove il singer canta in modo profetico "And God bless you all for the song you save us".
Il vero capolavoro di questo disco è sicuramente Deathblow, traccia che parte con un Chino sottovoce sotto un accompagnamento di chitarra per poi crescere con l'andare avanti della track per toccare punte di altissima classe da parte di tutti i componenti.
Da segnalare anche Bloody Cape, Lucky You e la bellissima Needles And Pins.
Insomma un grande album per i precursori, insieme ai Korn, del nu metal che tende a proporre i Deftones nell'olimpo del nuovo rock.

Atmosfere dilatate e dilanianti, pacifiche ma ossessionate dalla voce stupenda di Chino Moreno, e all'improvviso esplosioni di rabbia e violenza urlate risucchiate dai baratri più oscuri dell'anima.
Questo è il disco dei Deftones. Bello bello bello. Loro sono una spanna su tutti... (vedi filone 'nu-metal'). Veramente un'altra storia...

Con questo nuovo disco i Deftones riescono nel non facile compito di fondere spunti musicali molto vicini ai primi Cure con una brutalità metalcore che non ha paragoni nella scena alternativa attuale.
Questo quarto CD rappresenta a tutti gli effetti la massimizzazione del concetto deftoniano di musica, là dove il teorema dell’alternanza tra pieni e vuoti trova la sua dimostrazione più esauriente.
