Premessa necessaria: non mi prefiggo di scrivere una recensione che regali nuove o esclusive notizie agli appassionati lettori di DeBaser su un album che, probabilmente, in molti conosceranno assai meglio di me. Ho tuttavia sentito il desiderio di scrivere ciò che "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" riesce a comunicarmi ogni volta che l'ascolto. Sono un giovane e novello fan dei Depeche Mode, ma assolutamente convinto che il gruppo di Basildon possa ancora oggi distogliere le nuove generazioni dalla musica di bassa qualità imperante.
"Songs Of Faith And Devotion" esce nel 1993 e, a pensarci, costituisce il fulcro (cronologicamente parlando) della produzione dei Depeche Mode: dodici anni prima esordivano con "Speak & Spell", dodici anni dopo ci stupivano con "Playing The Angel". Simbolico, come dato. In effetti stiamo parlando di un album atipico, in tutti i sensi. Rinnovare il successo ottenuto in progressione con "Black Celebration", "Music For The Masses" e principalmente con "Violator" non poteva essere semplice per una band che sempre aveva fondato sulla sperimentazione e sulla conseguente sorpresa di tutti la propria longevità (e sembra incredibile che si potesse già parlare di "Lunga vita" per gruppo che ancora oggi è in attività!). Dunque, a scanso di dubbi, il successo arrivò. Continuo, intenso, fanatico, come dimostra la straordinaria esibizione documentata da un genio come Anton Corbijn in "Devotional".
La grandiosità di questo Lavoro è però slegata dal banale aspetto live, come si potrebbe credere. Anzi, benchè il disco assuma toni tipici del rock a più riprese, l'epicità elettronica fa, a mio parere, da protagonista assoluto. Un epicità diversa da quella di "Music For The Masses", un epicità tragica, lugubre, che ti colglie con brividi di disperazione e ansietà. "I feel you" è la personificazione della voce di Dave Gahan, che irrompe spaventosamente, alla ricerca di una via di fuga dal "sound" che fino ad allora riteneva forse troppo ovattato. La chitarra di Martin Gore ti coglie impreparato, e allora ti rendi conto che ti trovi di fronte a qualcosa di impensabile, ricordando l'introduzione di "Violator", nel magnifico vortice elettronico di "World In My Eyes". Accusato da alcuni di risultare monotono, il primo brano è probabilmente il punto di maggior contatto con la musica rock per i Depeche Mode, fatto che lo rende più che degno di nota. La seconda traccia è quasi indescrivibile; non vi sono parole per giudicare la straordinaria commistione di un testo che è probabilmente tra i più riusciti di Martin Gore, una musica che rappresenta l'apice della sinfonicità elettronica e, se ne si vuole tenere conto, un videoclip che ne interpreta lo spirito alla perfezione. Tutto questo è "Walking In My Shoes".
"Condemnation" è un pezzo assai particolare, ma se lo si sa apprezzare può diventare insostituibile. Un coro gospel fa da sfondo a un'interpretazione di Dave Gahan che, lo sapranno tutti, è ritenuta il culmine di ciò che le sue doti possono offrire. Una canzone a cui sono particolarmente legato, magnifica. "Mercy In You" è un pezzo molto valido, che da forza e continuità all'insieme. "Judas" è un brano che la voce di Martin rende inquietante, ma che non è mai entrata nelle mie predilette e, fuor di dubbio, non rappresenta il meglio dell'album. La splendida "In your room" merita un discorso a parte. Innanzitutto bisogna prendere in considerazione la versione dell'album, che è lunga ma, per me, non necessita di alcuna modificazione. Qui la batteria assume un ruolo importante, come del resto ogni strumento acustico assume rilievi imprevedibili in tutto l'album. Il ritmo, dopo l'intro, non cala, e crea un pezzo fondamentale che, seppur non geniale come altri già citati, può essere considerato manifesto dei Depeche Mode di quest' epoca.
"Get Right With Me" e "Rush" sono, a mio parere, rispettivamente un discreto brano e uno buono. Non hanno forse la forza per dire qualcosa di significativo. "One Caress" è una commovente e classicheggiante prova del valore di Martin Gore, che, dopo aver scritto un testo che non può lasciare indifferenti, lascia accompagnare dagli archi la sua sublime voce, creando emozione ad ogni ascolto. Paradossale che la scaletta del tour si aprisse con la perfetta conclusione di questo capolavoro, "Higher Love". Canzone d'alto livello, vagamente trascinata, come a dire allo spettatore che è triste sia così, ma lo spettacolo è finito.

Il loro leader Dave Gahan sprofonda in una crisi psicologica a base di eroina, ma l'album suona cupo, minaccioso, opprimente.
Il capolavoro del disco risiede in 'In Your Room', gioiello di rara bellezza, forse il pezzo migliore della storia dei Depeche Mode.
