Erano i primi anni '80 quando a Basildon, cittadina dell'Essex (Inghilterra), si formava quella che poi si sarebbe rivelata la più influente e longeva Techno-pop band in assoluto.
I Depeche Mode, vantano nella loro carriera, milioni di albums venduti, tour mondiali ma non hanno mai smesso di rinnovarsi. Il risultato più sorprendente di questa continua evoluzione é proprio questo album, risalente al 1993 e pubblicato per la fedelissima Mute.
"Songs Of Faith And Devotion", sorprende per il fatto di essere estremamente vario nei contenuti (l'elettronica si fonde con blues, gospel, funky, new wave) ma al contempo incredibilmente omogeneo. La matrice dark, che aveva caratterizzato anche molte tracks del precedente successo planetario "Violator", è ancora presente e la voce del cantante Dave Gahan rappresenta il vero filo conduttore in un lavoro così sfaccettato.
"I Feel You", pezzo introduttivo e primo singolo dell'album, parte con un feedback (che introduce il brano e lo rende riconoscibile ai concerti) seguito da un travolgente riff di chitarra electro-blues: diverrà uno dei brani simbolo dei nostri, anche per la straordinaria interpretazione del cantante Dave Gahan. "Walking In My Shoes", la seconda track, é uno dei brani preferiti dal gruppo e dai fans, per il suo incedere cupo e ritmato ed é quasi sempre presente nella scaletta di ogni album. "Condemnation" è un sorprendente gospel (una delle ultime fisse di Martin Gore è la religione vedi anche titolo dell'album) in cui Gahan supera se stesso sublimando una delle migliori interpretazioni della sua carriera.
Martin Lee Gore, autore di tutti i brani, come in quasi ogni album si ritaglia un piccolo spazio anche da interprete: la sua voce eterea può essere apprezzata in "Judas", canzone dall'appeal mistico e misterioso, e "One Caress" arrangiata tutta per archi. Proprio questo brano è l'emblema della svolta dei nostri che in questo capitolo si dimostrano meno integralisti nell'uso dell'elettronica, e regalano ai propri fans anche momenti acustici indimenticabili. "In Your Room" é uno dei paragrafi più coinvolgenti di questo lavoro: un Gahan malinconico e riflessivo, una gamma di suoni eccelsamente prodotti, catarsi e tristezza, rabbia e poesia, sensualità. Le armi dei Depeche sono sempre le stesse: la vena compositiva di Gore, la splendida voce di Gahan, il tecnicismo e le follie elettroniche di Alan Wilder tastierista e tecnico del suono, prezioso sia dal vivo (suona anche la batteria) che da studio (la leggenda vuole che l'arrangiamento della storica "Enjoy The Silence" sia farina del suo sacco e non di quello di Gore che aveva proposto una versione "ballad" del brano).
Un compendio di musica moderna più che un album, grande maturità espressiva, sensibilità artistica e una cura del suono senza eguali.

Il loro leader Dave Gahan sprofonda in una crisi psicologica a base di eroina, ma l'album suona cupo, minaccioso, opprimente.
Il capolavoro del disco risiede in 'In Your Room', gioiello di rara bellezza, forse il pezzo migliore della storia dei Depeche Mode.
