"Songs of Faith And Devotion" rappresenta per i Depeche Mode un punto di non ritorno, una sorta di punto di arrivo del loro stile musicale.
Per la prima volta Gore e Soci fanno un uso minore dei Sintetizzatori, che fino ad allora erano stati i compagni fedeli delle avventure musicali del gruppo di Basildon. Oltre all'introduzione costante della chitarra, grande novità è l'introduzione della Batteria Acustica, suonata magistralmente da Alan Wilder (anche se i suoni verranno processati piu volte al sintetizzatore) ed inoltre questo è il primo album dei Depeche Mode in cui sono presenti dei musicisti esterni e delle coriste.
Il tema principale dell'Album è la Fede, ma non è specificato che tipo di fede sia, se fede nell'amore o fede in dio.. potrebbero essere tutti e due, ma io non vi voglio parlare di questo, ma della musica, delle 9 tracce che compongono questo autentico capolavoro di musica Pop ed Elettronica. La prima canzone che apre l'album è "I Feel You" che sarà anche il primo singolo estratto da "SOFAD". Il brano è un techno-blues, con un riff di chitarra che ti entra subito in testa, ed il cantato di Dave è espresso al massimo con la canzone che è quasi urlata dal cantante, che fino a pochi anni prima era chiuso in una sorta di vetro, il vetro rappresentato dalle sonorità fin troppo banali dell'Elettropop.
Seconda traccia è "Walking in my Shoes", ovvero "provate a mettervi nei miei panni" canzone dedicata alle categorie di persone che si trovano in difficoltà (vedi drogati.. divorziati ecc), chissà se Gore quando ha preso la penna ha pensato a Dave e al fatto che la droga stava cominciando a portarselo via e a consumarlo. Fatto stà che "Walking in my Shoes" rappresenta forse la canzone piu riuscita di tutta la carriera dei Depeche Mode, con un arrangiamento mistico, che la rende spunto di molte riflessioni. Segue "Condemnation" una sorta di canzone atipica per i Depeche Mode (per fare i suoni della batteria sono usate le valigie) ma che è ugualmente una perla. Qui le potenzialità vocali di Dave Gahan sono spinte fino al limite, e "Condemnation" può essere annoverata come la canzone piu innovativa di tutta la carriera dei Depeche Mode. Il coro di sottofondo è opera di Martin Gore e di Alan Wilder.
Poi "The Mercy in You", una sorta di Trip-hop, di cui non c'è molto da dire. Ed eccoci a "Judas" la prima delle canzoni cantate da Martin Gore, "Judas" è una canzone a mio avviso piu bella da vivo che non sull'album, forse, rovinata dagli arrangiamenti celtici, che sicuramente non rendono giustizia a questa piccola perla. Forse il capolavoro dell'album è "In Your Room" una canzone di 6 minuti (naturalmente parlo della versione del disco, la versione single di 4 minuti forse non vale nemmeno la pena di citarla) con un intro che fa accapponare la pelle con un giro di basso che ricorda benissimo il battito cardiaco e il cantato di Dave che si miscola a questo battito cardiaco in maniera gentile e non fredda. Qui Alan Wilder esprime al massimo le sue potenzialità di Batterista.
Eccoci a "Get Right With me" forse la canzone meno riuscita del disco ma non per questo brutta canzone. La canzone dopo è "One Caress" l'altra canzone cantata da Martin Gore. Bellissimo l'arrangiamento con una vera orchestra di archi ad accompagnare Martin Gore e compagni. Chiude il disco "Higher love" canzone anche questa che segue lo stile di "In your Room", intro lento, ma che poi cresce piano piano.
Che dire.. dopo questo album usciranno dischi che sicuramente sono bellissimi, ma che non reggeranno mai il confronto con questo disco, vero capolavoro di tutta la carriera ventennale dei Depeche Mode.

Il loro leader Dave Gahan sprofonda in una crisi psicologica a base di eroina, ma l'album suona cupo, minaccioso, opprimente.
Il capolavoro del disco risiede in 'In Your Room', gioiello di rara bellezza, forse il pezzo migliore della storia dei Depeche Mode.
