Ci troviamo di fronte a "Killers", seconda realease dei mitici Iron Maiden, uscita a quasi due anni dal debutto discografico, che con l'entrata di Adrian Smith alla chitarra al posto di Dennis Stratton (di cui, francamente penso se ne ricorderanno in pochi) battezzano la lunga serie di cambiamenti della line-up avvenuta nella band da li fino a "Powerslave", quinto album e il primo che presentava gli stessi elementi dell'album precedente.
Comincio con l'affermare che questo cd (che a mio avviso si presenta come l'anello di congiunzione tra il primo lavoro, ricco di sfumature rock e i successivi con un sound più definito con le solite note suonate a terzine) è di pregevolissima fattura anche se leggermente inferiore al primo.
La bellissima strumentale "The Ides Of March" apre le danze, per poi proseguire con la sensazionale "Wratchild" che presenta un giro iniziale di basso da antologia, nato dalla mente del mai troppo elogiato Steve Harris, scatenato soprattutto in questo album, dove ha griffato tutte le songs da solo, (a parte la Title Track, composta assieme a Paul Di Anno) affermandosi come uno dei più grandi Songwriter della storia.
L' incredibile terzetto d'apertura si conclude con la splendida "Murders In Rue Morgue" dove nei testi è presente l'influenza del genio di Edgar Allan Poe, per poi trovare da li fino alla conclusiva "Drifter" una discontinuità nel valore delle canzoni, anche se ripeto sono tutte lodevoli e songs come l' apprezzabile strumentale "Genghis Khan", le buone "Purgatory" "Prodigal Son" e la coinvolgente Title Track meritano sicuramente di essere citate.
Ogni singolo membro del gruppo offre una buonissima prestazione: Il duo Adrian Smith-Dave Murray dimostra grande bravura alle chitarre, Clive Burr dietro le pelli non sbaglia niente e il succitato Steve Harris con il suo quattro corde cavalca nel vero senso della parola.
Una nota più importante va data in fine al cantante Paul Di Anno che, anche se tecnicamente sotto Bruce Dickinson, mette nella sua voce tanto sentimento da rendere ogni canzone ancora più piacevole, regalando secondo me in questo album la sua migliore prestazione di sempre.
Purtroppo Paul verrà cacciato dalla band alla conclusione del tour promozionale di questo disco a causa dei suoi eccessi nel fumo e nell'alcool trascurando così la voce. Un' addio forse un pò troppo prematuro per l'indimenticato singer che avrebbe potuto dare ancora molto tra le fila della Vergine di Ferro.
L'unica pecca di questo album come detto prima è la discontinuità, ma per il resto "Killers" può essere definito come il secondo colpaccio di quei cinque giovanotti che dimostravano già una maturità degna dei più grandi gruppi del periodo: una vera lezione di NWOBHM!
Assolutamente da avere, sia per i fans che per coloro che non amano il metal.

Gruppi come i Maiden sono degli esseri amorfi, che si sono venduti al migliore offerente.

Il basso di Harris è molto presente e in questo disco alcuni suoi giri faranno la storia del rock duro.

Sin qui abbiamo sentito SOLO capolavori, ed in mezzo a questi capolavori, pezzi come Innocent Exile o Purgatory rientrano nella norma.
La title-track è un capolavoro della storia degli anni 80: no comment ragazzi.

Un intro che come tutta la canzone tiene un ritmo 'galoppante', che personalmente adoro.
