"Killers", degli Iron Maiden, uscì quasi due anni dopo al debutto, che arrivò al quarto posto delle classifiche inglesi, lanciando loro verso un pubblico abbastanza ampio, che tenderà pian piano ad ingrossarsi fino a riempire intere arene, come in diversi live da loro pubblicati.
La line-up aveva subito la prima di una lunga serie di variazioni, con Harry Smith che aveva sostituito il poco ricordato Dennis Stratton. Questo fù un importante cambiamento, non solo perchè Smith era tecnicamente superiore a Stratton, ma anche perchè egli contribuì a scrivere una buona parte delle canzoni insieme ad Harris. Per il resto, alla voce c'era ancora il buon Paul Di Anno, con la sua voce profonda e calda, in seguito sostituito dal più tecnico Dickinson, per colpa della sua dipendenza dall'alcool e dal fumo, così trascurando la propria voce.
L'album inizia con una perla strumentale di 1 minuto e mezzo, The Ides of March, e fin da subito la Vergini dimostrano che il loro debutto non era un fuoco di paglia, riuscendo ad inserire in quel misero minuto e mezzo, quanto meglio si poteva fare, grazie anche ad un intreccio di assolo incredibile, iniziato prima da Smith e chiuso da Murray. Proseguiamo e troviamo un altro classico, Wrathchild, aperto da un giro di basso molto bello, e da un accompagnamento perfetto dei chitarristi (interrotto da qualche scala) e del perfetto Clive Burr, che non sbaglia un colpo in tutto l'album, sempre puntuale nei rulli e nel ritmo, fino ad arrivare allo splendido ritornello. Storia del metal. Murders in the Rue Morgue all' inizio assomiglia molto alla mitica Children of the Damned, ma poi si dimostra ben più veloce e elettrizzante, assomigliando di più alla canzone che precedeva il pezzo dell'album "The Number of the Beast", Invaders.
Another Life inizia con un riff, un assolo ed il solito giro di basso, tutti molto difficili, e proseguendo diventa sempre più veloce ed "agitata". I due chitarristi, grazie ai loro splendidi assoli, sembrano coinvolti in una "sfida", forse per chi brucia per primo la propria chitarra con le proprie dita, e tutto ciò viene dimostrato in un altra grande canzone strumentale, Genghis Kahn, dove nel mezzo mi sembra di scorgere un riff già sentito in Halloweed By Thy Name. Per capirci, sin qui abbiamo sentito SOLO capolavori, ed in mezzo a questi capolavori, pezzi come Innocent Exile o Purgatory rientrano nella norma, ma in un normale album sarebbero stati il pezzo forte. Pensate poi, se fra tutti questi capolavori sbuca fuori un capolavoro ancora più immenso, la title-track. No comment ragazzi, una capolavoro della stroria degli anni 80'.
Per il resto gli altri pezzi sono sempre bellissimi, ma mi sembra inutile dire sempre le stesse cose: capolavoro, incredibile ecc.
