È il 1969 e la scena rock è popolata da gruppi rock dalla forte contaminazione jazz e blues. Nasce la fusion, nasce il rock progressivo, ma soprattutto nasce l'hard rock. E coloro che l'hanno introdotto definitivamente sono noti a tutti: i Led Zeppelin. I Led Zeppelin pubblicano all'inizio del 1969 il loro primo album, Led Zeppelin I, album ricco di canzoni dallo stampo blues, in cui la voce graffiante di Plant e la chitarra di Page regnano sovrane. Nell'album sono presenti anche delle cover di artisti blues come Willie Dixon, come I can't quit you. Non scordiamoci di pezzi prettamente rock come la canzone che apre l'album, Good times bad times, e Communication breakdown. Il gruppo si afferma già nel contesto musicale europeo.
Nell'ottobre dello stesso anno, quel lontano 1969 nel quale prevale ancora il rock progressivo e psichedelico, esce nei negozi Led Zeppelin II, secondo lavoro della band. L'album sembrerebbe banale a causa del titolo semplice, ma è tutt'altro che banale. L'album si apre con un pezzo da novanta, una canzone che segnerà la storia del rock, che ancora oggi si canta, Whole lotta love, famosa per il suo riff di chitarra orecchiabile e insistente. Il testo è a sfondo sessuale, come molti nella discografia dei Led Zeppelin. Nel bel mezzo del brano Robert Plant, il cantante e leader della band, si abbandona ad urla e gemiti sessuali che sfociano nella batteria di John "Bonzo" Bonham e nel riff di chitarra elettrica di Page. Tale canzone è seguita da What is and what should never be, canzone più dolce nella prima parte, ma che nel ritornello esplode con un ritmo forsennato. La terza canzone del lato a è un pezzo molto rock, dominato dal basso di John Paul Jones. Il testo presenta delle chiare allusioni sessuali: non a caso prende il nome di The "lemon" song. Il lato a si chiude con un famosissimo pezzo dall'atmosfera più quieta e dal testo molto dolce, scritto da Plant e dedicato alla moglie. La chitarra introduce il brano ma poi verrà sostituita dall'organo di John Paul Jones come strumento prevalente.
Il lato b si apre con Heartbreaker, canzone hard rock che presenta il famoso assolo orecchiabile di Page alla chitarra. La canzone che segue, Living loving maid (she's just a woman), è il pezzo più scanzonato dell'album. Appena parte la canzone si sente la voce di Plant che urla "With a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat, livin', lovin', she's just a woman ...". Ramble on è un pezzo di ispirazione tolkieniana (J.R.R. Tolkien - autore del Signore degli anelli). Nel ritornello la voce di Robert Plant esplode in un canto graffiante, mentre le strofe sono più calme. Il penultimo brano dell'album è uno strumentale diventato famoso nella storia del rock per l'assolo di batteria di Bonzo e per il riff di Page. Una delle pietre miliari del rock, un pezzo dalla forte vena epica. La canzone che chiude l'album si intitola Bring it on home, pezzo blues firmato Willie Dixon, famoso bluesman.
Un album prettamente rock, un album che segna la storia del rock, un album che ci introduce nel magico mondo dell'hard rock, un album senza esclusione di colpi, un album dove è impossibile trovare un difetto. L'ascolto è molto piacevole, un album che consiglio a tutti. Led Zeppelin II è un inno a quelli che vivono di rock.

Questo disco sancisce l'inizio dell'hard rock, e sicuramente questo disco sarà il più hard rock della carriera dei Led Zeppelin.
Un classico. E scusate se è poco.

Led Zeppelin II avrebbe contenuto l'inno simbolo della generazione hippie: 'Whole Lotta Love'.
Questo CD, come prodotto discografico, merita 5 perché ha saputo riconfermare lo stratosferico successo del primo CD.
