Era il 1969 e nasceva l'hard blues, passato alla storia come HARD ROCK.
Il suo atto di nascita è LED ZEPPELIN II (1969).
Il suo primo gemito è "Whole Lotta Love" (che prende le mosse da "You Need Love" di Willie Dixon): riff al cardiopalma e pathos vocale.
In quest'album (che con "In Rock" dei Deep Purple farà scuola) il resto lo fanno l'impennata di chitarra, basso e voce all'unisono in "Heartbreker", con assolo strepitoso di Page che funge da intermezzo, le meravigliose liriche in "Ramble On" e "Living, Loving Maid" e l'assolo di batteria (a mani nude) di Bonham in "Moby Dick" che entra nella leggenda così come le 4 corde del basso stressate da Jones in "What Is And What Should Never Be" e nella suadente "The Lemon Song", mentre "Thank You" altro non è che una splendida dedica di Plant alla moglie tessuta sulle dodici corde che incontrano il genio nelle dita di Page.
La stupenda closer "Bring It On Home" preannuncia ciò che sarà il successivo lavoro discografico.
Led Zeppelin III (sebbene contenga il miglior pezzo blues che queste orecchie abbiano mai ascoltato: "Since I've Been Loving You") apre all'alchimia ed all'esoterismo con atmosfere celtiche folk che domineranno la seconda parte del lavoro (la vecchia side "B" del vinile). Verranno riprese ("Going to California e "Battle of Evermore") e fuse con l'hard rock ("Black Dog" e "Rock And Roll") in Led Zeppelin IV che grazie alla ballata "Stairway To Heaver" li consacra a leggenda rock.
Ma il capolavoro che contiene l'abc del rock duro rimane Led Zeppelin II: unico e vero manifesto del genere nella carriera del mitico gruppo inglese. Il sentiero lo tracciano "Dazed And Confused" e "Communication Breakdown" nel depupt album dello stesso anno, dove però erano ancora fortissime le tinte del «blues rock psichedelico» ("Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "I Can't Quit You Baby" e "How Many More Times") di matrice anglosassone tanto caro ai vari Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Yardbirds (di cui i New Yardbirds poi diventati Led Zeppelin furono un'appendice contrattuale imposta dallo storico manager Peter Grant) e piuttosto vivaci le reminescenze del tradizionale «folk» ("Black Mountain Side") e persino del «beat» ("Good Times Bad Times").
Una rassegna del loro repertorio in studio, denota uno sviluppo musicale nel complesso scevro da asservilismi ad etichetatture musicali di comodo e, comunque, restringerlo all'hard rock sarebbe onestamente riduttivo: ma dal vivo, questa è stata, a tutti gli effetti, il prototipo delle hard rock bands con tanto di mirabili evasioni in improvvisazioni a più non posso (molto spesso i concerti si prolungavano ben oltre il programma in scaletta): rimarranno celebri le esibizioni al Madison Square Garden di New York (1973) ed all'Earl's Court di Londra (1975). Acquisiranno diritto di cittadinanza nel vocabolario rock, termini come «axe-man» e «front-man» dopo aver visto duettare sul palco il chitarrista Jimmy Page ed il cantante Robert Plant. La potenza mista a fantasia di Bonham influenzerà la successiva generazione di heavy drummers. Senza dimenticare poi il contributo straordinario al basso così come alle tastiere di Jones. Insomma: tutta la band rappresenterà un'icona indelebile del rock duro che si esalta «on the road».
La morte di John Bonham anticiperà ciò che appariva inesorabile: lo scioglimento avvenuto di fatto nel 1982 con una raccolta dal titolo (inequivocabile) "Coda" che raccoglierà refusi inediti dei lavori precedenti nei quali ("Houses Of The Holy", "Physical Graffiti" e "On Through Out The Door") il quartetto si manterrà lontano (tranne alcuni momenti di "Physical Graffiti") dal capolavoro in questione. 10 anni dopo usciva il "Remasters" mentre "Nevermind" dei Nirvana pubblicato l'anno precedente (1991) dispiegava tutti i suoi effetti.
Era il 1992 e l'agonizzante Hard Rock riceveva il colpo di grazia dalla foga travolgente ed altrettanto effimera del «grunge» di Kobain e compagnia bella di Seattle (per compagnia bella mi riferisco al «bandaradàn» commerciale con perno a Seattle che attraverso operazione di marketing già sperimentata un ventennio prima con il punk, ha diffuso l'illusione che una semplice attitudine fosse un vero e proprio stile musicale).

Questo disco sancisce l'inizio dell'hard rock, e sicuramente questo disco sarà il più hard rock della carriera dei Led Zeppelin.
Un classico. E scusate se è poco.

Led Zeppelin II avrebbe contenuto l'inno simbolo della generazione hippie: 'Whole Lotta Love'.
Questo CD, come prodotto discografico, merita 5 perché ha saputo riconfermare lo stratosferico successo del primo CD.

La definizione del genere chiamato Hard-Rock è contenuto in soli 41 minuti incisi in un album che è diventato una leggenda.
'Whole Lotta Love' diventerà il manifesto del gruppo, con un riff duro che percorre quasi tutto il pezzo.
