Secondo la miglior tradizione di musica elettronica i Leftfield sono un duo (vedi Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Dust Brothers, Lamb, Underworld...) formato da Neil Barnes e Paul Daley.
Il disco presenta undici tracce tra cui i singoli classici datati ’92 "Release the pressure" e "Song of life". La prima inizia mistica e rituale profonda cupa e nera con il vocione pastoso di Earl Sixteen poi una ritmica giocosa che si rivela irresistibile battito house. Anche "Song of life" ha una partenza quasi misteriosa come di voci femminili lontane di cori di angeli etno ma in un crescendo sempre più epico s’innescano ritmi diversi tra loro rumori e distorsioni beat morbidi e ballabili inframmezzati da scratch.
Le coordinate di questo disco sono principalmente deep house (che a volte proprio come in "Song of life" si fa talmente scarna da sfiorare la techno una techno quasi liberatoria) ed acid jazz suoni elettronici che riportano ad un’idea di funk scattante e manipolato ed ai ritmi dell’Africa col loro calore e la loro roboante sacralità. Forse il suono può assomigliare a quello dei Chemical Brothers più trance ma ben più presente è un’attitudine stradaiola che rende l’atmosfera più vera.
Oltre a questi due pezzi contiene anche il loro classico per eccellenza datato ’93 "Open up". Su di un ritmo sostenuto tutto giocato tra techno ed estetica rumorista ed elettronica di derivazione punk s'inserisce non a caso la voce di John Lydon. Estatico frenetico sembra quasi un grido d’aiuto. La traccia è estremamente liberatoria sale la voglia di correre e scappare di muoversi disordinatamente in spazi immensi. Nei momenti di più ampio respiro riporta alle suggestioni dub dei PIL immergendoli in un contesto da rave.
I pezzi coevi all’uscita del disco mantengono le aspettative dei singoli. In "Afro-left" si crea un ibrido intrigante comprendente le radici africane del ritmo fortemente basato sulle percussioni (anche la voce di Djum Djum funge da ritmo) ed un assalto sonico proto-industrial.
Tutto il disco è intriso di voglia di sperimentare musiche e culture diverse creando una house profonda e debitrice più all’Africa che ai sound funkeggianti. È un disco di colori strani che al calore dei ritmi neri aggiunge una luce artificiale azzurrognola. Ma è soprattutto un disco ancora oggi freschissimo una miniera d’idee spesso innovative. No non è il miglior disco dance di sempre ma è un pilastro dell’elettronica non solo nell’ultimo decennio.
