In questo secondo album i Metallica scendono in campo con tutta la loro tecnica e la loro rabbia.
Se in "Kill'Em All" tutta la loro aggressivita era espressa in suoni grezzi ma veramente cazzuti e trascinanti, con un suono puramente thrash metal, in "Ride The Lightning" non tradiscono la loro natura e alternano riff violenti a assoli trascinanti in puro stile heavy metal.
L'album si apre con "Fight Fire With Fire", una canzone in cui viene esaltata tutta la potenza dimostrata nell'album precedente. Nel pezzo seguente, la title track, una delle migliori dell'album, Kirk si supera in un assolo assolutamente strafigo. Seguono due indiscutibili capolavori della discografia dei "Four Horsemen" e della storia del Metal: "For Whom The Bell Tolls" e "Fade To Black". Nella prima troviamo uno dei riff Metal forse più famosi. Il suono cupo della campana e delle chitarre ricorda l'atmosfera e lo stile targato Black Sabbath. "Fade To Black" invece è una ballad dolce e insieme rabbiosa che ci trascina in un'altra dimensione (naturalmente Metal).
Seguono i due brani meno incisivi del disco: "Trapped Under Ice" e "Escape" ma che secondo me sono comunque molto belli. Segue "Creeping Death" la canzone simbolo del disco in cui i Metallica sfornano riff e assoli da brivido. Infine "The Call Of Ktulu" unica traccia strumentale del disco lascia letteralmente senza fiato.
Secondo me il disco insieme al precedente ("Kill'Em All") e al successivo (il mitico "Master Of Puppets") per un metallaro puro è assolutamente da avere. Questi tre sensazionali capolavori fanno parte della storia del Metal. Dopo la morte di Cliff non saranno più gli stessi cazzoni che ci piacevano tanto e diventeranno solo dei commercialisti della ditta di Bob Rock (come si può constatare ascoltando dall'album "Load" in poi). Che nostalgia!!!

Il riff iniziale vale vent’anni di Metallica.
Peccato che un album perfetto venga rovinato dalla voragine qualitativa lasciata da Trapped Under Ice e Escape.

I Metallica riescono a costruire canzoni belle e piene di carattere con solo tre o quattro riff.
