Recensione album: Invincibile di Michael Jackson
Nel 2001 uno degli artisti pop più influenti della storia musicale pubblicò quello che fu il suo ultimo album in studio in vita. Erano passati già ben 4 anni dall'ultimo album di Jackson del 1997 "Blood on the dancefloor", un album piuttosto sperimentale che raccoglieva remix dei suoi precedenti successi dell'album History . Il cantante alla fine degli anni 90 si appresta a comporre un nuovo album completamente inedito e per crearlo si assicura la collaborazione di alcuni dei più grandi produttori e compositori musicali di allora tra cui ricordiamo Rodney Jerkins, Babyface e Teddy Riley, ma dietro le quinte accanto a questi si trovano alcuni tra i migliori ingegneri del suono per rendere "Invincible" un album originale e senza precedenti.
Michael Jackson è sempre stato conosciuto e rinomato per le sue produzioni sempre avanti con i tempi per arrangiamenti e melodie. Oltre a ciò Michael chiama al suo fianco alcune grandi voci per i cori e per i featuring tra cui il defunto rapper Notorious Big o Brandy senza dimenticare il suono melodioso e struggente della chitarra di Carlos Santana. Dopo due anni intensi di lavoro passati negli studi di registrazione di New York e Los Angeles, e con il budget impressionante di 45 milioni di dollari, viene alla luce l'album "Invincible" anticipato da grandi attese e dal più che promettente singolo promozionale "You rock my world". Ma passiamo all'analisi critica delle 16 tracce presenti nell'album:
"Unbreakabke", è l'apripista scelto per introdurre l'ascoltatore in un'atmosfera di suono elettronici e ritmi sincopati di batteria e tastiere, la voce di Michael è energica e rabbiosa, il cantante canta della sua resistenza alle difficoltà che nella sua vita gli si sono parate di fronte, ribadendo il fatto che nonostante tutto lui sia ancora in piedi. Il pezzo è una fusione di hip hop e urban e come intermezzo rap Jackson si affianca della collaborazione virtuale di Notorius big, rapper defunto nel 96. Il pezzo è molto potente e sarebbe stato un ottimo singolo di successo se fosse stato pubblicato.
"Heartbreaker", il ritmo concitato della batteria elettronica e digitale è di grande pregnanza in questo pezzo dove la voce di Jackson canta di un amore freddo con una donna il cui unico divertimento è infrangere cuori , il ritmo è molto hip hop e riprende lo schema ritmico del pezzo precedente con influssi r n'b, il bridge è molto ricercato e ben rafforzato dal coro, un buon pezzo elettronico
"Invincibile", il terzo pezzo è la titletrack dell'album e segue le ritmiche e le batterie elettroniche dei precedenti brani, in questa canzone il cantante ci parla del suo tentativo di conquistare una donna sempre insoddisfatta e quasi inavvicinabile alle emozioni umane. Il clima asettico rende il pezzo un po' rigido da ascoltare ma di certo è molto ballabile, e infatti anche questo sarebbe un buon club banger, i vocalizzi finali di Michael sono sensazionali e sofferti
"Break of dawn", l'atmosfera hip hop fin qui provata cede spazio a tonalità più melodiose e soft con questo quarto pezzo molto rilassante e "Smooth", il tema della canzone è molto romantico e sensuale senza cadere nella volgarità, la batteria elettronica rallenta permettendo al r'n b di scorrere verso atmosfere dolci accompagnate da canti di uccelli e sintetizzatori e tastiere che evocano l'atmosfera mattutina. La voce di Michael è molto sciolta e piacevole nel lasciarsi ascoltare
"Heaven can wait", l'atmosfera soft diventa quasi sognante quando si apre il coro di questo pezzo dalle vibrazioni molto r'n b, un amore etereo e angelico circonda l'ascoltatore con questa canzone paradisiaca, la voce romantica del cantante si lascia apprezzare in acuti e alti notevoli ma il ruolo fondamentale è quello del coro nel ritornello che evidenzia il ruolo di Michael nella sua intenzione di restare in vita per continuare ad amare
"You rock my world", le atmosfere da ballad lasciano per qualche minuto il passo a una mid-tempo ormai reputata un evergreen di Michael, questo è il primo singolo dell'album e avendo ricevuto un'accoglienza piuttosto calorosa ha aumentato notevolmente le aspettative di questo album, le tastiere e i cori ci riportano in un atmosfera anni 80 romantica e ballabile, uno dei migliori pezzi dell'album, accompagnato da un video che ci riporta ai tempi di "Smooth criminal"
"Butterflies", il ritmo rallenta nuovamente con "Butterflies", un pezzo molto r'n b pieno di melodie soft e vocalizzi molto estesi, il falsetto di Jackson raggiunge vette altissime in questa canzone d'atmosfere sognanti. La voce di Jackson è accompagnata a tratti da una voce femminile che fondendosi con quella di Michael crea una stupenda sinergia vocale molto apprezzata. Questa canzone ricorda nel ritmo "I can't help it" dello stesso Jackson nell'album "Off the wall" del 1979
"Speechless", la voce in a cappella di Michael apre questo pezzo molto sinfonico e dai suoni morbidi, la voce calda di Michael è semplicemente sublime e commuovente, "Speechless" è di certo una magnifica perla artistica, i cori e l'orchestra si alternano con un maestria incredibile e il tutto si conclude di nuovo con la voce a cappella di Michael che ci lascia davvero senza parole
"2000 watts", la batteria elettronica di questo pezzo ci riporta alla realtà dopo il sogno di "Speechless", forse il ritmo troppo energico del pezzo spezzando le atmosfere armoniose di "Speechless" porta l'ascoltatore a non accogliere al meglio questa canzone. La particolarità di questa canzone è la voce del cantante che è stata alterata con il pitch per abbassarla di due toni, si hanno difficoltà a riconoscere la sua voce se non grazie alla cadenza delle parole
"You are my life", questo pezzo r'n b melodico con elementi soul, è dedicato alla figlia di Michael. Una dedica d'amore forse un po' troppo melensa ma che comunque coinvolge inevitabilmente l'animo di chi ascolta, il pezzo è stato arrangiato da Baby Face.
"Privacy", le sfumature soft cessano per esser sostituite dal pezzo rock dell'album, forse il rock è l'elemento meno presente in questo album molto più orientato sul r'n b. privacy è un grido di protesta dove il cantante rivendica a sé il proprio diritto di intimità nella sua vita quotidiana. La voce del cantante è stressata e alterata ma coglie nel segno e il tutto è accompagnato dall'assolo del chitarrista Slash
"Don't walk away", è il dodicesimo brano dell'album, un pezzo molto romantico e triste in cui Michael canta di un amore ormai finito che non avrebbe mai voluto perdere, ciò che restano sono i ricordi. I vocalizzi fanno da padrone in questa canzone soprattutto nei ritornelli ben accompagnati da archi e violini
"Cry", Richard Kelly mette la firma su questo pezzo ispirato che affronta i temi sociali della fratellanza fra tutti gli uomini segnati da un destino comune. Le tonalità sono di speranza e gridano all'unione tra le genti del mondo. Il pezzo è un crescendo che parte dal beatbox ai tamburi, accompagnati dal piano fino a giungere al suo apice con i cori sempre più altisonanti e soul-gospel sul finale
"The lost children", in questo pezzo Michael si priva di tutte le sue milionarie collaborazioni per scrivere e comporre unicamente con propria mano questo inno alla infanzia e all'amore per i bambini, le atmosfere sono dolci e di preghiera, e un inaspettato bridge accompagnato dalla chitarra acustica ci portano in atmosfere ormai dimenticate, il finale è scandito da un coro di voci bianche
"Whatever happens", tutta la passione e l'amore romantico sono catturati in questo splendido pezzo firmato Michael Jackson e Carlos Santana. Forse il miglior pezzo dell'album, la voce di Jackson è dolorosa e appassionata nel narrare un amore sofferto che deve continuare nonostante le avversità, gli intermezzi di chitarra di Santana ci trasportano in luoghi latini, questo pezzo sarebbe stato un ottimo singolo di chiusura per l'album, ottimo per romanticismo nel mercato europeo e latino
"Threatened", la voce di un presentatore degli anni 70 Rod Serling ci introduce nelle inquietanti e spettrali atmosfere di quest'ultimo pezzo dove i ritmi convulsi, le batterie elettroniche e i sound elettronici ci ricordano i primi tre pezzi di "Invincibile". Michael assume le fattezze di uno spirito malvagio che non lascia in pace colui che in passato lo hanno tormentato in vita, il rap computerizzato di Rod Serling è geniale e le atmosfere funeree ricordano il funky disco di "Thriller" o "Ghost"
In conclusione Invincible è un album molto collaborato e super prodotto e nonostante le aspettative, non riuscì ad ottenere il risultato sperato nonostante le 12 milioni di copie vendute ci ricordano sempre che l'album ha comunque riscosso un notevole successo, ma ciò che colpisce è il fatto che anche qui Michael colpisce nel segno portando alla nascita un lavoro che potrebbe benissimo esser passato per un disco contemporaneo del 2011, dieci anni che non si sentono per questo magnifico e passionale album che rimarrà per sempre impresso nella storia musicale nonostante i tentativi di boicottaggio della etichetta discografica stessa, la Sony, in seguito a problemi contrattali con il cantante. Se l'album avesse ricevuto un'ottima campagna pubblicitaria rafforzata da qualche videoclip in più , il destino del disco sarebbe stato certamente più luminoso e memorabile, Invincible si presenta come un'opera poco compresa ma che riserva piacevoli sorprese. Merita sicuramente l'acquisto.

La sensazione che si ha ascoltando questo album è quella di essere in una Ferrari testa rossa che però non riesce a partire.

Invincible è come se MJ fosse indeciso se prendere la via delle sue origini o quella moderna.

"Invincible" è l'ultimo tentativo di rappresentare ancora il fior fiore delle celebrità in un panorama musicale in piena evoluzione.
"You Rock My World", il singolo, è gustoso, ballabile e la traccia in cui Jackson performa con più sicurezza e certezza.
