"Sono troppo vecchio per sedermi e scrivere ancora rock ‘n roll".
E' arduo trovare ancora qualcuno disposto a credere a quella faccia di bronzo di Noel Gallagher. Effettivamente "Don't Believe The Truth", l'ottimo album che aveva definitivamente riacceso la stella della band mancuniana dopo una "crisetta" più di popolarità che prettamente artistica, è considerabile alla fin fine l'opera più "poppeggiante" degli Oasis: poche chitarre elettriche e tanto senso melodico. Ma con "Dig Out Your Soul", settima studio release dei fratelli più famosi d'Inghilterra, la carte in tavola cambiano pesantemente.
Il riff di "Bag It Up" mette subito in chiaro che stavolta, più che guardare ai Beatles, i ragazzi vogliono spingersi oltre; capita quindi che Noel si ritrovi a citare come influenze, oltre agli immancabili "scarafaggi", bands come The Pretty Things, The Who, Iggy ed i suoi Stooges e, arrivando a tempi più recenti, The White Stripes e gli amiconi Kasabian.
Il duo a strisce di Detroit, per esempio, fa capolino (o forse qualcosa di più) nei tre minuti di "Waiting For The Rapture", interpretata attraverso un celestiale ed impeccabile falsetto dallo stesso Noel. "The Turning" rimanda al 1997 di "Be Here Now" con l'aggiunta di un quanto mai pertinente piano nella strofa ed un finale preso pari pari da "Dear Prudence". "The Shock Of The Lightning" è un tipico pezzo alla Oasis con l'aggiunta di una spolverata di Primal Scream, "I'm Outta Time" è il classico che i mancuniani riescono a tirar fuori in ogni loro album (piccolo particolare, questa meraviglia per piano e voce è scritta da un quanto mai ispirato Liam) e contiene una parte dell'ultima intervista che John Lennon ha rilasciato prima di essere ucciso. "(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady" è la cosa più strana mai uscita dalla penna del Gallagher maggiore (uno stomp blues martellante ed intenso risalente alle sessions per "Heathen Chemistry"), mentre "Falling Down" sembra un pezzo kraut rifatto da Coldplay e "To Be Where There's Life" suona come la perfetta commistione tra "Supersonic" e "Who Feels Love?". Passati il trascurabile hard rock di "Ain't Got Nothin'" e le piacevoli schitarrate in libertà di "The Nature Of Reality", chiude una ondeggiante "Soldier On", inserita nel disco su consiglio degli amici The Coral (da segnalare un insolito Noel alla batteria).
Gli Oasis convincono alla grande in questa nuova veste più rock/psichedelica e meno "paracula", confermando la regola che vuole una grande svolta dopo la pubblicazione di un best of ("Stop The Clocks", pubblicato nel 2006).
Che il nuovo sound dei Gallagher avvicini addirittura qualche detrattore? Vedremo...

Gli album che si sono succeduti negli anni non fanno che rimescolare le carte, scambiare i pezzi, invertire l’ordine degli addendi. E come si sa, il risultato non cambia.
L’unico pezzo davvero bello, in cui la melodia dolce e cullante si sposa alla perfezione con la voce sensuale di Liam.

Gli Oasis sono stati grandi, ma non per questo meritano incondizionatamente l'approvazione e il successo di cui, a mio parere ingiustamente, godono ancora oggi.
L'album si commenta da solo: una stanca e reiterata riproposizione della stessa solfa che dopo quasi due lustri risulta davvero insopportabile.

Un album che insieme al precedente non cattura come quelli 'facili' dal 2002 in giù.
I'm Outta Time, il miglior brano scritto da Liam in tutta la sua carriera nel gruppo, pure con una melodia, un arrangiamento e un'interpretazione sentita non ha colpito sufficientemente al cuore.
