Non potevo mancare all'appuntamento, il ritorno del grande madman non poteva lasciare indifferenti, specie dopo quella mezza sola di "Down to earth", e non credo di essere stato l'unico ad essere colpito da questo desiderio. Devo dire onestamente che l'attesa è stata ripagata in modo soddisfacente (o almeno, meglio del già citato predecessore) anche se si attesta su livelli più che normali, e se vogliamo, in parte prevedibili.
La buona manifattura dell'album è fuori discussione, d'altra parte Ozzy è un professionista, ed anche i musicisti di cui si circonda non sono da meno. Zakk Wylde in primis, vero ed indiscusso protagonista dell'album secondo me, che si riconferma un ottimo chitarrista (se non volete definirlo guitar hero fate voi, ma per me, a modo suo, lo è senza dubbio).
Musicalmente parlando si parte bene con le prime due tracce, "Not Going Away" e "I Don’t Wanna Stop", l'energia è dirompente, specie con quest'ultima dal ritornello esplosivo (e non a caso scelta come singolo). Il tono cala leggermente con la title track che tuttavia riassume il concept dell'album e più in generale le tematiche trattate da Ozzy per l'occasione, attuali e moderne, tra cui la guerra in Iraq e il dollaro onnipotente ("The Almighty Dollar"). Ci si riprende al successivo solco "Lay Your World On Me", una di quelle immancabili ballads in cui Ozzy sa di riuscire bene da sempre, nonostante il gracchiare della sua voce, ed anche stavolta fa centro e per ben due volte nell'album, anche se "Here for you" suona leggermente più scontata, vuoi per la posizione che occupa nella tracklist, vuoi perchè altamente debitrice a "Goodby to romance".
Parecchie le influenze, dal sound alla "No more tears" a quello più ottantiano, e perfino alla Black Sabbath se vogliamo, tutti riletti in chiave moderna, e a tratti ("Civilize The Universe" e "The Almighty Dollar") con delle leggere sfumature nu metal, come già capitato a "Down to earth". Definire però quest'album come l'ideale proseguimento di "No more tears", o come quello della rinascita di Ozzy in questo nuovo millennio che finora ce lo aveva fatto conoscere più sotto l'aspetto da showman che quello da cantante, mi sembra tuttavia esagerato.
E' evidente che le cose sono state fatte con calma (ben sei anni) e che ciascuna è stata curata nel dettaglio, compreso qualche piccolo (ed inevitabile) trucchetto sulla voce in fase di recording. Questa ennesima prova di certo vale come testimonianza che il nostro Ozzy (che ormai va per i 60 anni) è ancora in grado di stupirci con le sue mosse (siano esse i reality show o i dischi) che lo rendono sempre di più un personaggio di spicco nel mondo della musica, e non solo.
Un buon disco, musicalmente ben fatto e con delle liriche attuali e mature, ma sempre e comunque (forse mi ripeterò, ma è così) il genere di album da aspettarsi oggi da un eroe del passato: grande mestiere, buono ma niente di più, specie se paragonato con il glorioso passato. Forse questo confronto non ha ragione di esistere, ma ahimè, è inevitabile confrontarsi con quanto è stato fatto in precedenza se il nome che porti ha un certo peso, perchè si parla sempre di un mito, e un disco così, prodotto da un gruppo emergente, oggi non avrebbe la minima chance.
