Questa non è una recensione del debutto dei Floyd ma un'appendice a quello che ha scritto Benson&Hedges. Un'appendice che pone delle domande che vorrei condividere con voi. Spero di non aver utilizzato questo spazio in modo improprio.
Barrett decise di incidere questo disco quando già aveva "smesso" di essere "Syd". Già dopo See Emily Play le cose degenerarono purtroppo. L'album è inclassificabile per bellezza e perfezione. Se proprio devo trovare un difetto forse lo trovo nel brano di Waters, salvato dalla chitarra di Barrett. Non dimentichiamo la sovraumana capacità di Rick Wright ad inventare melodie sui temi di Barrett. In Matilda Mother Rick è quasi l'assoluto protagonista. Almeno quanto Syd. E questo vale per tutto il disco. Rick Wright anni dopo confessò che era pronto a formare una nuova band con Syd se solo si fosse ripreso (nel 1968) quando la Blackhill ent. si sciolse (l'agenzia dei Floyd). Personalmente non smetterò mai di pormi queste domande..
1- Perchè Gilmour e Waters hanno fatto sì che Madcap fosse così, comunque meravigliosamente, scarno (avevano solo 3 giorni per ultimare il disco.. lo so.. ma il brano "If it's in you" poteva benissimo essere sostituito con "Opel" o altre out-takes validissime, dando di Syd un'immagine meno pazzoide ed incontrollata).
2- Perchè Rick Wright nel successivo "Barrett" si è solo limitato a fare degli accompagnamenti senza esprimere il suo genio in perfetta sintonia con Syd, valorizzando ulteriormente il disco, magari "avvicinandolo" a Piper.
3- e sopratutto.. perchè nel 1975 durante le session di Wish you were here quando Syd disse di essere pronto a fare la sua parte gli dissero "No, le chitarre già sono state fatte..". Cosa gli costava farlo registrare? Secondi voi... una registrazione di Barrett che suona in Shine on you crazy diamond.. Wish you were here.. ha un prezzo? Anche se al tempo non l'avrebbero messo nel mix finale per Syd sarebbe stato importantissimo. E nella versione "Immersion" di Wish you were here avremmo trovato davvero un diamante.. e non quella cazzata del violinista Grapelli.
E forse Syd sulla spinta emotiva avrebbe fatto il terzo disco. Tutte ipotesi, ma con un'unica verità. Il primo passo lo fece proprio Syd.. ma la giornata finì che con tutti i miliardi fatti con Dark side of the moon quel giorno lo lasciarono tornare a casa in autostop senza nemmeno pagargli un taxi. Dopotutto era il matrimonio di Gilmour..
Personalmente adoro ogni fase della band inglese, ma il capitolo Barrett è una cosa a parte.

Stiamo parlando dei britannici Pink Floyd... ebbene sì, già dal primo disco si capisce quello che avrebbero fatto in futuro.
Disco eccellente, che si discosta un po' dal sound tipico dei Pink Floyd ma che è ugualmente un colosso della storia della musica.

Uno di quelli orologi... i suoi vecchi compagni lo hanno conservato e lo hanno fatto suonare ancora una volta all’inizio di Time.

I primi pink floyd sono riusciti a sintetizzare in una visione unica e inimitabile gli impulsi provenienti dall'acid rock westcoastiano, l'interesse per le forme musicali libere e improvvisate e l'amore per il fiabesco più autenticamente inglese.
Al genere proposto non ho saputo dirvi quale, perché i pink non hanno uno stile a sé.. Ma sono un misto di più generi... Forse è questo che li rende così grandi...
