Questo è l'album che chiude gli anni 70, un periodo di grande importanza per la musica, dominato dal progressive e sfumato quando invece ci fu l'esplosione del punk. Però si può dire che pochi gruppi avevano saputo interpretare un decennio così' complesso come i Pink Floyd.
Questo album molto ambizioso non solo fu il loro ultimo capolavoro, ma anche un'opera che sapeva leggere alcune tematiche del decennio attraverso la metafora del muro: sia le divisioni e le segregazioni politiche, che la condizione di separazione tra Roger waters e il pubblico, tra lui e il suo passato (tantissime le figure chiave, in particolare la madre tratteggiata nella bellissima "Mother") e tra lo stesso Waters e i restanti membri della band.
Musicalmente il lavoro è superbo: se Waters era l'indiscussa e monarchica mente, Gilmour per conto suo riusciva a ritagliare spazi incredibili, con assoli fantastici come in "Another brick in the wall" e sopratutto "Comfortably numb", che dimostrano che l'essenza della musica dei Pink Floyd è sempre quella di alienare l'ascoltatore, perso in bellissime dimensioni psichedeliche.
Sicuramente il miglior album dei Pink Floyd assieme a "the piper at the gates of dawn". "The wall" è un grandioso affresco sulla paura dell'uomo di non riuscire a comunicare con il prossimo, e di restare solo in un mondo che non comprende. Dopo di esso, la fine dei Pink Floyd.

Una mastodontica opera di classic rock formato doppio lp, che di rock in realtà non ne contiene molto ma è farcita di seriosità come Alienazione e Depressione.
Il risultato finale è una noiosissima e incolore accozzaglia di trito hard rock da stadio, disco music di seconda mano e finto cabaret anni 30.

The Wall è lo sfogo di Roger Waters maturato tra la perdita del padre durante la IIª Guerra Mondiale e il logoramento del suo amico Syd Barrett.
L'album è eccezionale perché le canzoni vanno apprezzate nel loro insieme e non singolarmente, come 'The Thin Ice' con l'inizio del pianto di un bambino.

È impossibile non farlo. Credo che ognuno di noi possa immedesimarsi in Pink, il protagonista di questa opera, nelle sue crisi, nei suoi stati d’animo.
Mentre ascolti le note dell’assolo ti sollevi da terra... per ricominciare poi con la strofa, con i suoi effetti, le sue musiche, perfettamente in sintonia.
