"The Works" fa tornare i Queen all'apice del gradimento del numeroso pubblico che li acclama, sia per la visibilità che gli elaborati video girati di supporto ai singoli forniscono, aprendo prevedibilmente le porte delle charts non solo di nuovo e vecchio continente, quanto il tour mondiale che li porta ad esibirsi anche in Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Giappone e Sud Africa. Sicuramente gli appuntamenti che nessun fan della regina dimenticherà, saranno la partecipazione per la chiusura del Rock in Rio (gennaio 1985) di fronte a più di 250.000 paganti (mai successo prima per un solo appuntamento musicale!) ed a quell'evento anche mediatico - si calcola, seguito televisivamente da circa due miliardi e mezzo di persone - che più ha caratterizzato la storia del rock degli anni '80, chiamato Live Aid (luglio 1985).
Ad ottobre del 1985 i Queen cominciano a dare concretezza all'erede di "The Works", alternando le sedute di registrazione tra i Musicland Studios (Monaco) ed i Townhouse Studios (Londra). E' proprio durante le sedute in terra tedesca che il gruppo riceve l'irrifiutabile proposta (ma occasione di rivincita verso il mondo della celluloide...) di confezionare dei brani per il primo film di Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander" - L'ultimo immortale - con Sean Connery e Christophe Lambert), noto sino ad allora come geniale regista di clip per The Stranglers ed Elton John ma ancor di più per i riuscitissimi "Rio" e "The Wild Boys" dei Duran Duran.
La band durante la lavorazione in corso del nuovo disco non subisce alcun sovraccarico di attività, riuscendo addiritttura a trarre ulteriore linfa vitale dagli impegni presi, coniugando alla perfezione creazione ad una sempre viva volontà di crescita artistica, presenti come ad inizio carriera. Ne è prova l'adrenalinica "One Vision" (già uscita come singolo ed inserita nella coeva colonna sonora del lungometraggio "L'Aquila d'Acciaio"): tastiere e chitarra ruggente a dare il benvenuto e chiamare a raccolta tutti i tratti distintivi, da quelli classici ai più moderni, sintetizzando l'intera carriera di Mercury & Co.. La title-track richiama con eleganza il lavoro di due anni prima, ponendo quel motore di freschezza compositiva a nome Roger Taylor in grado di sfornare come non mai, un successo dietro l'altro. Grande dimostrazione di eterogeneità di stili esce fuori con la delicatezza struggente di "One Year of Love" che troverà spazio anche sulla soundtrack di "Highlander", e la soul song "Pain is so Close to Pleasure" in cui vengono ad esprimersi acuti più familiari a Barry Gibb o Mick Jagger per una distesa atmosfera di indubbia ispirazione Motown. La trascinante "Friends Will Be Friends" arriva in perfetta successione ad allietare chi - e non solo, - da anni ondeggiava con accendino alla mano sulle note di "We Are the Champions" lasciando all'incandescente "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" con tanto di citazione vanhaleniana iniziale, alzare nuovamente il voltaggio per poi con la martellante "Don't Lose Your Head", confermare la validità di scrittura di un drummer sicuramente sopra le righe. Con "Who Wants to Live Forever" è la figura di Brian May (che ne canta anche l'introduzione) ad ergersi come artista completo in tutte le sue espressioni, concependo un brano epico nella strofa e dall'irresistibile crescendo, dando vita ad un magniloquente ritornello sublimato dalle orchestrazioni che ne fanno una delle punte di diamante dell'OST del film di Mulcahy. In perfetta linea con quanto ascoltato sino ad ora è "Princes of the Universe": un fulmine a ciel sereno che districandosi tra vitalità melodica e fermezza ritmica concede all'altalenarsi dei cambi di tempo, il giusto battlefield musicale per il duello che nello spettacolare video girato per il brano, vede di fronte Christophe Lambert e Freddie Mercury con lo storico microfono a mezz'asta.
Siamo al cospetto di un disco fresco e che si fa strada senza sforzo nelle orecchie di chi ascolta, ma che non lascia dubbio alcuno sulla consapevolezza di quattro musicisti ancora (più) band di quanto non fossero stati in passato, collaudati al punto di vivere di reciproche affinità, unità di spirito ed intenti; una band in grado di dire la propria in poco più di quaranta minuti di musica dall'appeal irrefrenabile, e capace ancora di convincere i fans di vecchia data di quanto sia appagante per dei navigati artisti guardare sempre avanti senza sedersi sugli allori, demotivando chi avesse presagito alla regina un'imminente abdicazione ad un trono quanto mai stabile.

La piena rinascita dei Queen avviene nel 1986, anno in cui vede la luce "A Kind Of Magic".
"Who Wants To Live Forever" è un capolavoro di grande spessore e profondità.

Questo disco immortale ha suoni geniali che hanno rinnovato il techno-rock dove la voce di Freddie si distende in tutta la sua potenza di fuoco.
