Mi dovete perdonare. So che i Radiohead (specialmente Kid A) sono stati recensiti già abbastanza. Ma non potevo non scrivere qualcosa su quello che ritengo uno dei dischi migliori del nuovo millennio. Quindi fatemi sfogare 5 minuti e poi vi lascio in pace.
Iniziamo dal fatto che uscire da un album come Ok Computer non è cosa semplice. Capolavoro qua, capolavoro là, sei assediato dai giornalisti, dalle interviste. Ti verrebbe voglia di mandare tutto a quel paese. Beh, in fondo Thom stava per farlo.. Era ad un passo dallo sciogliere i Radiohead. Fortunatamente non lo ha fatto. Si è rinchiuso in studio, ha staccato i telefoni, ha messo fuori dalla porta un cartoncino con scritto "Non rompete le balle" e si è messo a scrivere pezzi nuovi.
E ha sfornato tutto quello che sentite in Kid A e in Amnesiac. (Piccolo inciso: sono del parere che se Thom avesse selezionato le 13/14 tracce migliori tra questi due dischi e le avesse messe tutte assieme a formare un unico disco, forse staremmo qui a parlare di uno dei lavori più grandi degli ultimi 30 anni.)
Ma va bene, esce Kid A. Attesa alle stelle. Ci si aspettava il clone di Ok Computer. Ci si sbagliava di grosso. 10 tracce da far accapponare la pelle. Si fa fatica a credere che siano i Radiohead. Pubblico diviso: è un orrore/è magnifico, è merda/è arte. Facile capire da che parte stia il recensore. E allora tutti attaccano la pippa "ecco, i fan ciechi e sordi di Yorke che osannano qualsiasi cosa esca dalla sua mente". Ma per favore... Continuate a vivere nel vostro mondo, in cui Thom avrebbe dovuto tirare fuori in eterno cloni di Ok Computer (nulla da togliere, per carità). Lasciate perdere.
Dicevo, 10 tracce da far accapponare la pelle. "Fanculo tutti! Me ne sbatto di quello che vogliono gli altri! Voglio sperimentare. Vediamo cosa ci esce."
Deve essere passato questo nella testa di Thom Yorke in quei momenti. Ed infatti, l'un-due-tre (e mettiamoci pure il quattro) iniziale è micidiale. Alla fine di "How To Disappear Completely" ti senti perso, non sai cosa sta succedendo, ti chiedi il perchè di tutto questo. Con "Optimistic" riprendi fiato, ma la chiusura non ti lascia scampo con l'epica "Idioteque" e la straordinaria conclusione di "Motion Picture Soundtrack". Rimani fermo per 5 minuti a fissare il vuoto. Ti domandi che cosa diamine sia successo nell'ultimo quarto d'ora. Devi riascoltarlo, devi assicurarti che quello che hai appena sentito è davvero ciò che stai pensando. Hai solo paura di pensarlo. Poi lo riascolti...
Si, è un capolavoro.
