Sono una sorpresa ancora oggi e vale la pena (ri)ascoltarli, anche se qualcuno li ha soprannominati "i Middle Of The Road in versione più rockeggiante".
Celebri tutt'al più per il loro superhit "Venus" del 1969, con il famoso riff di chitarra preso in prestito da "Pinball Wizard" degli Who, questi olandesi facevano quello che è stato definito "un pop psichedelico" sostenuto dalla stupenda voce della mezza-ungherese mezza-tedesca Mariska Veres, che a molti rammenta Grace Slick. E, in effetti, un'altra band a cui gli Shocking Blue furono associati erano i Jefferson Airplane: un paragone che calza loro a pennello molto più di quello con i M.O.T.R.
Quasi ogni track da loro sfornato è una vera gemma, e non è un caso che i Nirvana decisero di fare la cover di un loro brano: "Love Buzz". Gli Shocking avevano un suono molto particolare e inconfondibile, che scavalcava le barriere tra gli stili, barriere allora molto accentuate e di cui tenevano gran conto i critici e lo stesso pubblico. "Sally Was A Good Old Girl", per esempio, è un country, la dolce "Water Boy" si avvale degli arabeschi di un sitar, "Little Cooling Planet" è alquanto funky... ma, tutto insieme, è il tipico sound "azzurro scioccante" di questa band.
Non è difficile procacciarsi una loro raccolta. Se potete, ascoltate "I Love Voodoo Music", la sunnominata "Love Buzz" (attenzione: non è contenuta in 20 Greatest Hits!) o lo scatenato rock di "Daemon Lover". Robbie van Leeuwen (chitarra e sitar), che scrisse quasi tutte le loro canzoni - compresi i testi -, è senz'altro da annoverarsi tra i migliori "songwriters" del mondo.
Il gruppo andò in tour negli States insieme a Ike & Tina Turner, Sly & The Family Stone e Three Dog Night; fu in Sud America, Indonesia, Giappone, Hong Kong... Ma nel 1974 finì per sciogliersi, anche perché Robbie van Leeuwen si era stancato di fare da collante tra i singoli componenti e di sopportare la pressione della Elephant Pink, la loro label, che pretendeva almeno tre album all'anno. La cantante Mariska Veres si dedicò quindi a una carriera solista, presentando brani in olandese, tedesco e inglese, ma ottenne un discreto successo unicamente in Olanda. Nel 1993 cercò di organizzare una reunion, ma gli altri ex componenti degli Shocking mostrarono scarso interesse e lei richiamò in vita il progetto con musicisti completamente nuovi. Per anni, i neoformati Shocking Blue parteciparono a numerosi festival per gruppi "Oldies". Mariska si dedicò a latere al blues, al jazz e alla musica tzigana. Non si sposò mai e, come ai vecchi tempi del "sex, drugs and rock'n'roll", condusse vita morigerata, non fumava e non beveva (la sua bevanda preferita era da sempre il tè...).
Di lei dobbiamo parlare purtroppo al passato, in quanto la leader degli Shocking Blue si è spenta il 4 dicembre 2006 all'Aja; aveva soltanto 59 anni. Paradossalmente, a ucciderla è stata un tumore: proprio lei, che non era mai caduta vittima dei vizi..
Veres fu la prima cantante europea a incarnare, nell'epoca del beat, l'ideale della giovane sexy, in grado di ammaliare con la sua voce sensuale milioni di fans. Emblema della sensualità vocale di quell'epoca fu "Venus", che decretò il clamoroso successo della band, restando per oltre sei mesi nelle classifiche dei dischi più venduti in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. "Venus" è stata poi rifatta da altri gruppi ed è stata utilizzata spesso anche per spot pubblicitari. In "20 Greatest Hits" è, ovviamente, la traccia numero uno.
