Uno dei migliori dischi del progressive - metal. Dopo il primo ascolto di "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy"' è stata questa la mia prima impressione. E di album che hanno fatto la storia di questo genere io ne ho ascoltati, da Room V degli Shadow Gallery, a Images And Words dei Dream Theater, fino a Paradox dei Royal Hunt. Ma questo disco ha in sé un qualcosa di speciale, di sublime. Un qualcosa che si può apprendere e toccare con mano solamente ascoltandolo. Non proprio toccare con mano, ma l'ascolto fa sfiorare l'infinito, la dolcezza, la poesia.
La band è formata da musicisti che a livello tecnico hanno pochi eguali. Michael Romeo, Russell Allen, Thomas Miller, Michael Pinnella e Jason Rullo formano un quintetto perfetto, sotto tutti i punti di vista. Gli strumenti si fondono insieme dando vita ad un'opera immensa. In particolare evidenza la voce potente di Russell Allen che riesce anche a essere estremamente dolce nello stesso tempo e i virtuosismi chitarristici di Romeo, uno dei migliori chitarristi in circolazione.
All'interno dell'album ci sono continui riferimenti mitici ed epici, ma mai banali e scontati. Lontani da quelle band che fanno di questo aspetto il punto di forza della loro musica, per affascinare chi ascolta. Qui l'unica protagonista è la musica, la melodia, la potenza, l'armonia, e che musica. Il disco colpisce per la capacità del gruppo di spaziare all'interno di uno spazio sonoro stupendo creato dagli strumenti. Soprattutto per la capacità dei musicisti di passare da parti rabbiose e potenti a momenti di una melodia sconvolgente. Non tutte le band in campo prog - metal riescono in questo, e a mio avviso sta proprio in questo la vera bravura di una band. Il titolo dell'album si sposa perfettamente con la musica e l'atmosfera create dal gruppo. "Le ali divine della tragedia ‘'. Ascoltandolo è come intraprendere un viaggio fantastico, dal quale non sai se farai più ritorno.
L'album parte in maniera accattivante e diretta con "Of Sins And Shadows", caratterizzata da una chitarra che si sente in lontananza e esce all'improvviso scatenando tutta la sua potenza. Poderosa la voce di Russell Allen che insieme agli altri componenti fanno dei cori davvero belli ed epici. Una partenza travolgente. "Sea Of Lies" è anche un pezzo potente, e molto coinvolgente. Da brividi la voce di Allen nella parte centrale, il quale ci mostra l'estrema duttilità della sua voce sublime. C'è anche un grande uso delle tastiere che dialogano con la chitarra di Romeo. "Out Of The Ashes" è un brano molto bello, ma più diretto e meno prog rispetto ai precedenti. Si sente come sia orientato al power e si capisce dal fatto che è molto diretto e veloce. La prima perla dell'album è "The Accolade", che inizia con un arpeggio di chitarra splendido che prepara l'entrata di tutti gli altri strumenti, a cominciare dalle tastiere per finire con Allen che irrompe nel brano. Tipica canzone prog con cambi di tempo, di melodie che creano un'atmosfera fantastica. Unica. "Pharaoh" sintetizza al meglio lo stile della band, un brano potente con dei riff incisivi. All'interno del brano ci sono riferimenti all'antico Egitto e alle piramidi. Un tuffo nel passato creato al meglio dai componenti del gruppo, un esperimento riuscito alla perfezione. Molto trash è "The Eyes Of Medusa ‘', che fa convivere la potenza e la rabbia con la melodia e l'eleganza. Anche qui un riferimento mitologico, all'isola di Medusa, un'isola di morte. Davvero un tema originale affrontato dal gruppo. ‘' The Witching Hour ‘' è un pezzo abbastanza veloce, con una batteria incessante di Rullo per tutta la durata della canzone. Ora siamo finalmente giunti alla suite di 20 minuti che prende il nome dal titolo del disco, "The Divin Wings Of Tragedy" appunto. Fra le suite più riuscite e affascinanti della storia del prog - metal con melodie bellissime e molti cambi di tempo che creano nel complesso un brano molto articolato. Il brano ha anche delle sfumature epiche con Russell Allen che sfodera tutta la sua bravura e maestria. "Candelight Fantasia" conclude il disco, ed è il vero capolavoro dell'album. Un brano di una dolcezza unica nel quale viene fuori l'aspetto più melodico della band e della voce di Allen. Una conclusione migliore non si poteva avere per questo viaggio nell'Infinito. Occhio, che si sfiora solamente, perché la musica tocca l'Infinito, noi che ascoltiamo possiamo solo sfiorarlo.
"The Divin Wings of Tragedy" è il capolavoro di una band dal sound particolare e unico che si distacca nettamente dalle altre band prog - metal. I Symphony X riescono come pochi a essere rabbiosi e melodici nello stesso tempo. Uniscono nei loro pezzi parti davvero potenti a parti dolci, è questa la bellezza di questo gruppo. Con questo album hanno fatto qualcosa di importante, di storico, di immenso, come è immenso l'Infinito che riusciamo solo a sfiorare, non a toccare con mano.

Non è tanto la bravura che vince ma la capacità di scrivere canzoni appassionanti che non siano solo una lezione di chitarra.
