Son passati già dieci anni dall'uscita di quest'album, ma ho voluto recensirlo lo stesso essendo uno degli album che più mi ha avvicinato al panorama metal...
"The Divine Wings of Tragedy" segna un traguardo storico per la band di New Jersey del filo-malmsteeniano Michael Romeo e dei suoi 4 virtuosi colleghi. Dimenticando il magro bottino ottenuto con l'omonimo Symphony X dell' emblematico vocalist Tyler e passando per un buon "Damnation Game", raggiungono una vetta compositiva che li avvierà (fino alla consacrazione completa con "V") ad essere tra le prog-power metal band più in rilievo del globo terrestre.
Partiamo allora con la track list:
1 - Of Sins and Shadows - Il pezzo apre con un potente riff di Romeo che subito viene assistito da un grande Jason Rullo alla batteria che alterna ritmi sincopati ai più tirati 4/4 col doppio pedale per rendere il brano eterogeneo sin dalle prime battute. Ulteriormente arricchito dal gusto del tastierista Pinnella, il tema principale sfocia in un armonizzazione vocale che richiama i Queen di Freddy e dà il via alla strofa cantata da un grande Russel Allen che dà subito un assaggio della sua voce possente e graffiante dando ancora più corpo ad una ritmica già imponente. Brano strutturato in maniera semlice ma che ci dà un assaggio delle orchestrazioni che saranno utilizzate più avanti nell'album. In ogni caso ottimo opening.
2 - Sea of Lies - Il basso di Thomas Miller apre le danze per un pezzo meno d'impatto rispetto al precedente ma assolutamente non inferiore per quanto riguarda arrangiamento. La strofa in controtempo passa in maniera indolore grazie ad un'ottima scelta di accenti sul cantato e il piano elettrico di Pinnella ( seppur dal gusto vintage) accompagna magistralmente il ritornello reso abbastanza orecchiabile. Ed eccoci giunti all'unisono di chitarra e tastiera, un pezzo tecnico tra i più difficili dell'album.
3 - Out of the Ashes - Ritorno al passato. L'introduzione ci fa capire che i SYmphony X di 'Damnation Game' sono ancora vivi e vegeti e si fanno sentire in un bellissimo unisono dal gusto barocco tra chitarra e synth che si sposa benissimo col cambio di tema nella strofa. Strofa simil -thrash, bridge progressive e ritornello quasi power giustificano l'ascolto di questo bel brano che non finisce di stupire neanche nella parte degli assoli di Pinnella e Romeo dove vengono utilizzate scale armoniche che danno un gusto medio-orientale al pezzo.
4 - The Accolade - questo è uno tra i pezzi più famosi dei Symphony, X, canzone articolata per cercare di raggiungere un connubio perfetto tra ballad e riff heavy subito trovato già dall’incipit dove il suono di chitarra acustica lascia spazio alla distorsione pur mantenendo una musicalità dolce e eterea, impreziosita dall’accompagnamento di Thomas Miller e dalle melodie suonate da un magistrale Pinnella alle tastiere. Allen ci dà l’ennesima prova di versatilità e si concede un piccolo fraseggio vocale prima della perla assoluta del brano dove le campane iniziali vengono supportate ora dal pianoforte ora dal violino e così via, fino a raggiungere una sovraincisione di strumenti che presi singolarmente suonano poche note, ma tutti assieme raggiungono la completezza e l’impatto di un’esecuzione orchestrale.
5 - Pharaoh - E qui si ritorna al caro vecchio metal, licks di chitarra distorta abbondanti, batteria martellante, basso in sedicesimi e voce “dura” arricchiti da un filo di tastiera che tuttavia supporta la complessità di una brano molto valido tecnicamente. Ancora l’utilizzo di scale armoniche e arabiche fanno giustizia al titolo della canzone donandole un potere di evocazione esotica non indifferente, ma dona anche una melodia che in certi tratti fa pensare troppo alle colonne sonore dei film tratti da “ Le Mille e una Notte”
6 - The Eyes of Medusa - Ecco di nuovo il thrash che esce dalle corde della chitarra di Romeo…sembrerebbe la solita solfa e invece i Symphony utilizzano il loro vecchio e validissimo trucco: mantenere una linea melodica costante e nel frattempo cambiare l’accompagnamento degli altri strumenti in modo da donare al pezzo mille sfumature diverse…esempio eclatante fin dai primi secondi dove il riff principale di chitarra diventa accompagnamento per la tastiera evocativa di Pinnella. E così via fino alla fine in un susseguirsi di variazioni assoli e quant’altro, in sostanza un altro grande brano.
7 - The Witching Hour - Probabilmente il pezzo più debole del cd, dato anche dalla durata, ma i duetti tra pseudo- clavicembalo e chitarre ricorrenti durante tutta la canzone valgono l’ascolto. Il brano risulta nettamente più semplice e con melodie meno ricercate rispetto ai precedenti. Nonostante ciò Allen riesce a dare un’identità alla composizione con una buona prova.
8 - The Divine Wings of Tragedy - Eccoci alla suite di 20 minuti di questo meraviglioso album che ora sforna questo ensemble di melodie così diverse tra loro ma collegate perfettamente. I 5 americani riescono nell’intento di far trascorrere 20 minuti di canzone mantenendo viva l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore con rapidi cambi di tema e suggestive marce “imperiali” che donano un tocco di maestosità al capolavoro di questa title track. Il coro iniziale è interessante e nonostante i terribili registri di voce dei musicisti (Allen escluso) riesce nell’intento di evocare un’atmosfera “cattedralica” che lascia spazio alle trumpet of hell di pinnella che richiamano temi musicali di soundtrack da film medievale. Nella canzone c’è spazio per tutti: assoli di basso, riff di chitarra aggressivi e calmi, cambi di tonalità, citazioni dalla Divina Commedia, momenti ambient, virtuosismi a non finire, il tutto a partire da un crescendo di intensità e variazioni che lentamente si conclude con una strofa cantata da un Allen che cambia in continuazione modalità di cantato…sintesi di quest’ opera magnifica.
9 - Candlelight Fantasia - Ultimo pezzo di DwoT. È essenzialmente una ballad. Riesce nell’intento di essere struggente come i momenti descritti nel testo (si parla della vita di un musicista). Allen dà il meglio di sé e romeo si esprime in uno dei suoi migliori assoli. Il brano è decisamente “romantico” ma mantiene la varietà e gli improvvisi cambi che caratterizzano gli altri brani dell’album. All’inizio però, la melodia vocale strizza un po’ l’occhio a “The Only Way” degli ELP (ascoltate Tarkus e lo saprete). Comunque si possono dire solo 2 parole: bellissima track.
I Symphony X compiono una grande impresa con la realizzazione di quest’opera magnifica, riassunto dei loro due dischi precedenti e assaggio di quelli che andranno a venire. Sicuramente tra gli album power-prog migliori di sempre. Ne consiglio vivamente l’ascolto agli amanti del genere e non per la capacità di suscitare emozioni e scenari fantastici, capacità concessa solo a poche altre band. Voto 4 e ½ / 5

Non è tanto la bravura che vince ma la capacità di scrivere canzoni appassionanti che non siano solo una lezione di chitarra.
