E' la prima volta che faccio una recensione su un loro album. Nel 2000 avevo 16 anni, pertanto il "mio primo vero disco" degli U2 con cui sono cresciuto, in cui mi sono sempre rispecchiato e che più sento è proprio "All That You Can't Leave Behind", anche perchè essendo nato nel 1984 non ho potuto "vivere con attenzione" il periodo degli U2 che va dal 1980 al 1992. Avendo incominciato concretamente a percepire ciò che avveniva intorno a me dai 7-8 anni in poi, ricordo che With Or Without You veniva trasmessa alla radio essendo la loro hit più famosa, e poi in Tv nel 1993 c'era Numb che veniva utilizzata come colonna sonora di uno spot, per una campagna contro la droga. Una mia seria cultura musicale l'ho iniziata a edificare dal 1999, andando avanti e indietro nella Storia del Rock per studiare i grandi gruppi. Sembra ieri il giorno in cui è stato pubblicato All That You Can't Leave Behind, ma sono passati ben 13 anni da allora. Era un album che puntava più alle vendite, alla ricerca del consenso popolare che alla qualità finale del prodotto, forse perchè "Pop" del 1997 venne bastonato dalla critica e dal pubblico (6 milioni di copie per lo più in Europa, Australia e Sud America). Infatti gli U2 potevano benissimo ritirarsi dalle scene e appendere le scarpette al chiodo, invece decisero di accettare la sfida e scendere in campo. Di certo non è un album paragonabile al loro capolavoro "The Joshua Tree" o ad "Achtung Baby", ma i testi erano e restano profondissimi. In fondo è un album semplice e sincero, in quanto siamo lontani anni luce dalla tristezza e dalla desolazione descritta in "Pop". In questo disco si abbandonano le contaminazioni elettroniche che nel bene e nel male avevano influenzato i precedenti lavori: è un album accessibile per tutti, ma non si registra un vero ritorno alle origini perché distanti dalle atmosfere post-punk di "Boy" e "October". In All That You Can't Leave Behind si parla di Fede (come in tutti i loro lavori), e nella semplicità del prodotto finale viene fuori l'empatia, la felicità nel godere di ogni piccola cosa e di ogni singolo istante che ci vengono offerti dalla vita, il camminare sempre e comunque avanti. E' così intensa la serenità che viene fuori da ogni brano, che al loro primo ascolto siamo portati anche ad elevarci. Attimi di luce troviamo sparsi qua e la, nonostante pace e speranza nel mondo non facciano rima. Sicuramente a volte è necessario fermarci quando non riusciamo a venire fuori da alcuni momenti brutti ma, nonostante tutto, abbiamo il coraggio e la certezza di dire che ogni giorno è "un gran bel giorno". E poi così sulla strada, possiamo incontrare una ragazza di nome Grazia (magari per le vie di New York) che genera bellezza anche dalle cose più brutte. Io credo che tutto questo sia stupendo. All That You Can't Leave Behind fu premiato con un Grammy Award nella categoria "Best Rock Album" nel 2001; Beautiful Day vinse 3 Grammy Award come "Song of the Year", "Record of the Year" e "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals"; Elevation fu premiato con il Grammy per "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" nel 2002; Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" scritta per Michael Hutchence vinse nel 2002 il Grammy nella categoria "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals". Infine Walk On ha vinto il Grammy Award come "disco dell'anno" nel 2002 e viene citata nei ringraziamenti della mia tesi. Prodotto dal collaudato duo Brian Eno-Daniel Lanois con la collaborazione in alcuni brani di Steve Lillywhite, Mike Hedges e Ricard Stannard il disco, ad oggi, ha venduto più di 12 milioni di copie. Successo dovuto sicuramente ai 4 singoli. Infatti qualche detrattore musicale spesso solleva questo dubbio :<< A parte le prime quattro canzoni, cosa è rimasto di ATYCLB?>>.

Il mix fra genialità artistica, stile inimitabile di Edge e voce del secolo di Bono è il massimo che l’orecchio umano possa desiderare.
Un album con 5 canzoni come Beautiful Day, Stuck in a moment, Elevation, Walk on e Kite merita un posto nei migliori album degli ultimi 20 anni.

Dire che gli U2 sono finiti con 'Achtung Baby' è eccessivo, ma 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' è il loro disco più insipido.
Potete immaginare, quando lo misi nel CD-player e partì 'Beautiful Day'. 3 anni di attesa, e sarebbe questo il singolo di lancio?
