Ormai siamo entrati nei grandissimi anni 80 dove gruppi seventies come Kiss, Alice Cooper e Judas Priest dettano legge e dove nascono tantissime band Hard Rock (Poison, Motley Crue, Cinderella) ispirati da quest' ultimi e dove si forma quello che diventerà l' attuale metal estremo di adesso (Death Angel, Metallica, Pantera ecc… ), sulle porte di questo decennio che segnerà indelebilmente la storia della musica si affaccia una band di 4 ragazzi poco più che ventenni, con alla chitarra e alla batteria due olandesini prodigio, alla voce un cantante carismatico al massimo e al basso un giovanotto simpatico e istrionico, naturalmente stiamo parlando (in ordine) di Eddie e Alex Van Halen, di David Lee Roth e di Michael Anthony, meglio conosciuti come Van Halen.
Fulminante è l'esordio di questa band che si presenta al pubblico con quello che è sicuramente il miglior album della loro carriera cioè "Van Halen", album innovativo e carico inizia subito a marchiare a fuoco sui nostri timpani quello che sarà lo stile Van Halen. Il brano si apre con una track adrenalinica e carica di energia "Runnin' With The Devil", breve riff di basso e la chitarra di Eddie e gli acuti di David ci presentano questa brano ruffianissimo, il ritornello ha poi un' orecchiabilità fortissima, pensate che sia un bel brano e che l' assolo meriti, bene aspettate di sentire i prossimi brani. "Eruption", signori qua c'è da fare una riverenza ad uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi, brano strumentale fatto alla chitarra è sicuramente noto a tutti quindi non parlerò tanto di come e strutturato e non ne tesserò le lodi (anche perchè non basterebbero 100 pagine) ma parlerò del significato che ebbeper quell' epoca, sono centinaia i chitarristi che appesero gli stivali o meglio le chitarre al chiodo, sentendo quel meraviglioso assolo in tapping i guitarist di mezzo mondo si chiesero come faceva Eddie a suonare cosi velocemente e con quelle sonorità, brano che merita la medaglia d' oro per tecnica, musicalità ma sopratutto innovazione. Superato questo brano (e che brano) passiamo a "You Really Got Me", e qui l' altissimo livello tecnico e "Made in Olanda" infatti i fratelli Van Halen danno dimostrazione di altissima bravura ed abilità (come se Eddie avesse ancora niente da dimostrare dopo "Eruption"), la canzone si basa su un ritornello veloce e pieno di cori, in fondo David Lee Roth ha una voce particolarissima che rende questa traccia fantastica, e il buon vecchio Anthony spara una scarica di riff fortissimi, perla che diventò un pezzo forte dei VH.
"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", insieme a "Jump" e "Dreams" è il mio pezzo dei VH preferito, chitarra oscura e granitica e batterie sempre tecnica ed affidabile rendono questa una delle più belle song dei VH, pezzo durissimo non ti esce più dalla testa, è uno di quei brani in cui non ti rimane che arrenderti al suono e iniziare a sfrenarti come un pazzo, la chitarra riesce ad avere delle tonalità dure e graffianti che rendono questa perla uno dei migliori pezzi presenti nella storia dell' Hard Rock, passiamo avanti per arrivare ad un buon pezzo "I'm The One", le chitarre si fanno sempre più graffianti anche se in questo brano la batteria è molto più avanti rispetto alla chitarra (ascoltate come riesce a tenere un ritmo velocissimo col doppio pedale), questo brano mi ricorda stranamente i VH di "1984", il ritornello è abbastanza carino anche perchè i cori lo rendono molto più attraente e carismatico, unica pecca e il fatto che gli strumenti che si fondono in un tornado di Hard'n'Heavy coprono la voce di Lee Roth, molto bello e convincente. Ora un' altro successone ovvero "Jamie's Cryin'", il pezzo è veramente strutturato bene e la chitarra di Eddie insieme al basso di Michael riesce a fornire un eccellente intessitura di riff duri e graffianti al brano che anche grazie al bellissimo ritornello diventerà un cavallo di battaglia dei VH. Ora arriva il brano "Atomic Punk", questo brano è un altro bellissimo pezzo perchè può vantare di avere un' ottimo riff di chitarra, una batteria tirata al massimo ed un basso che riesce a miscelarsi benissimo con tutta l' intessitura musicale cucita abilmente da Eddie e Alex, il resto lo fa ed anche eccellentemente David che riesce con una voce altissima e con una parlata velocissima a rendore questo brano carico e fortissimo e per altro in pieno stile VH.
"Feel Your Love Tonight", questo il titolo dell' ottava track, che si dimostra ancora una volta all' altezza delle aspettative che ci hanno dato i brani precedenti, ritornello scandito benissimo dalle voci dei quattro, gli strumenti come al solito sparano riff a raffica, brano che convince e che ci da la voglia di continuare ad ascoltare questo bellissimo album. "Little Dreamer" è la nona track dell'album e non è in stile VH, pezzo molto seventies, le chitarre (sopratutto all'intro) ricordano tanto i chitarristi virtuosi del passato (l'intro sembra ispirato dal re Hendrix), il cantato nelle strofe si avvanta di un David Lee Roth con una voce pacata e passionale mentre il ritornello con dei fortissimi cori e quasi celestiale, bene se questo bellissimo pezzo di VH aveva poco ne ha ancor di meno il successivo "Ice Cream Man", un pezzo blues anni 60, sembra proprio essere stato creato per essere suonato in un bar dell' Alabama, riff country-blues per un brano veramente atipico, verso la fine poi la band parte al massimo e con tonalità e suoni fa rivivere il periodo Presley. L'assolo finale è da Oscar. L'ultima traccia poi è proprio bella, hard rock come poche altre chiude al meglio questo capolavoro, la batteria sembra impazzire e Eddie effettua una serie di bellissimi virtuosismi, facile perdersi in queste sonorità durissime.
Bene questa è un'altra pietra miliare della storia della musica, un altro CD immancabile, un CD suonato da questi "prodigi" dell'hard rock, spero che la recensione sia soddisfacente. Ciao a tutti.

La straordinaria tecnica chitarristica di Edward Van Halen lo trasformò in un supereroe della chitarra per tutti gli anni 80.
Le 5 stelle sono d’obbligo, per tutti coloro che amano il rock questo album è obbligatorio, un classico irripetibile.

Ardore: è la prima parola che mi viene in mente ascoltando il primo lavoro in studio dei Van Halen.
Il suono della distorsione arriva potente e affilato come un rasoio, ... sembra di essere travolti da un’infinità di stelle cadenti.
