Scrivo un ultradoppione, in parte deluso dalle analisi appena lette, tenendo conto del fatto che è da tanto che non vedo una recensione degli Angra sulla home page di DeBaser. Mi farò perdonare con due rece di band sconosciute che non verranno filate da nessuno J
UNA BAND DIVÉRS
Gli Angra???
"Ah, quei brasiliani che facevano power metal progressivo/etnico verso la metà degli anni '90?". Questo il ricordo sbiadito di qualche mio amico che magari potrà corrispondere anche al vostro che state leggendo. Scrivo per descrivere un loro disco del 2004. Dopo aver metabolizzato l'uscita del loro leader e cantante André Matos i carioca, quattro anni or sono, tornarono sul mercato con un lavoro intitolato "Temple of Shadows".
Riconducibili al filone del metal più progressivo, riflessivo, orchestrale (e solo in parte dedito al power) hanno un sound facilmente riconoscibile nel calderone del macrogenere dell'heavy melodico in quanto esulano molto spesso dalle solite canzonette da 4 minuti con ripetizioni ossessive del coro e così avere di break strumentali e cambi di tempo. Permettetemi di dire che se il power banale con dragoni ed eroi muscolosi in copertina, fotografato con testi raccapriccianti ed i soliti giri di chitarra e voci squillanti, è un McChicken o un BigMc al fast food, gli Angra sono un piatto al ristorante da gustare con relativa calma.
IL DISCO
La calda ed intrigante copertina di stampo classico rimane impressa a fuoco come i testi impegnati. Questa volta i brasiliani si cimentano in un concept album incentrato sulla figura di un crociato del XI secolo che, mentre combatte, si pente delle sue azioni e si redime avviando un processo di valutazione etica delle sue azioni. L'iter è facilmente riconducibile nella tracklist del lavoro senza flashback che, infatti, inizia con la tempestosa e battagliera opener "Spread Of Fire" e si conclude con le riflessive note di "Late Redemption". (Gate XIII è un pezzo a sè: un bellissimo e divertente momento strumentale che in un collage elegante ci fa rivivere i pezzi clou del disco).
Con "Temple Of Shadows" Kiko Loureiro prende il posto di Andrè Matos per quel che concerne la fase di songwriting ed il cantante Edu Falaschi mostra maggiore personalità evitando, come successo in parte in Rebirth, di emulare o imitare il suo ingombrante predecessore.
GUESTS DAVVERO SPECIAL
Il risultato complessivo è davvero notevole grazie anche all'innesto di special guest di primordine che si cimentano in brani costruiti ad hoc per esaltare le loro diverse peculiarità.
Kai Hansen. Il re del power moderno con Helloween e Gamma Ray, viene a dare il suo contributo nel pezzo più esplosivo e dichiaratamente power ed easylistening dell'intero disco che risponde al nome di "Temple Of Hate". Una cavalcata memorabile, posizionata non a caso tra due canzoni completamente diverse, nella quale la voce passa in secondo piano rispetto al refrain e alle fasi strumentali fatte apposta per infiammare la folla in sede live.
Hansi Kursch. Lo storico frontman dei Blind Guardian si mette al servizio in "Wings Of Destination" ed invece del solito cantato ruvido ci offre anche un vibrato emozionante quanto insolito. Una song complessa e lunga con molti controtempi di Priester e dotata di uno splendido intermezzo che con estrema lentezza ci porta verso il finale orchestrale per chiudere il cerchio.
Sabine Edelsbacher. La piacente cantante degli Edenbridge arricchisce la classica e dirompente opener "Spread Your Fire" e duetta con Edu nel dolcissimo lento "No Pain For The Dead".
Milton Nascimento. Una forte tinta brasiliana ce la regala questa leggenda carioca che veleggia per i settanta esprimendo, in un cantato sofferto, la redenzione del nostro crociato nel gran finale del disco ("Late Redemption").
MUY BUENO
A tutto questo aggiungiamo brani maiuscoli come la mutevole "Angels And Demons" che mostra i denti nel break per poi lasciarsi andare ad un finale pomposo; il riflessivo "Waiting Silence" con pesanti innesti sinfonici ed un grande lavoro del basso ha un effetto ipnotico ed è capace di catturarci fin dal primo distratto ascolto; mentre "Morning Star" lascia di sasso per il suo inaspettato e piacevolissimo indurimento del sound. Tutto muy bueno, ma il vero capolavoro di Temple of Shadows è a mio parere "The Shadow Hunter" e non è un caso. Quando i testi e la storia hanno un senso e sono davvero sentiti è giusto che l'apice lo si raggiunga nel momento cruciale della storia: quello del pentimento in questo caso.
La chitarra acustica con un arpeggio etnico apre nel migliore dei modi per lasciare progressivamente spazio ad un riff maestoso. Il tempo cadenzato fa da cornice all'ingresso dolce di Eduardo. In un baleno siamo al cospetto di un coro lungo con innesti al bacio delle backing vocals. Quando nel testo la redenzione coccia contro i suoi vecchi ideali comincia il break con due domande che lanciano un lungo e piacevole momento di riflessione che fa esplodere, con un assolo volutamente combattuto, la svolta del crociato. Il finale è un tripudio da assaporare alzando semplicemente il volume.
CONCLUSIONI
Dal punto di vista tecnico il batterista Priester con l'uso del doppio pedale, controtempi ed una precisione assoluta mi ha impressionato al pari di Kiko Loureiro. Questo chitarrista (senza nulla togliere a Rafael Bittencourt) non solo è irritatamene pulito in fase di tapping, ma è ineccepibile anche con la chitarra acustica e scrive assoli diversi dalle solite scale e non va alla ricerca della velocità a tutti i costi.
In conclusione la produzione del suono maiuscola, la dovizia tecnica della formazione in toto, i contributi ottimamente studiati degli "ospiti", la bontà della tracklist estremamente varia, la profondità dei testi e l'intrigante copertina fanno di "Temple of Shadows" uno dei miei migliori acquisti dal 2004 ad oggi.

Gli Angra lo fanno con cura, prestando attenzione alla dualità tra liriche e musica.
Temple of Shadows va sinceramente promosso e merita l’acquisto.

Essere grandi artisti significa tirare fuori un album come "Temple Of Shadow".
Considero questo disco al livello di capolavori quali "Angel’s Cry" e "Holy Land".

Un cd dai mille volti e colori, vario e piacevole.
Una bella sorpresa, però c'è qualche cosa che forse non condivido, ma sono solo piccolezze in un mare di buona musica.
