Hai… hai presente quando ti trovi davanti a qualche cosa, bella o brutta che sia, più grande di te, ma di molto e la sua imponenza ti toglie il fiato, perché ti accorgi che alcune persone sono davvero definibili colossi… ecco, hai presente quella sensazione? Io l’ho provata ascoltando l’ultimo capitolo della discografia di un gruppo che, con gli anni, è riuscito a concentrare in se tutto ciò che il concetto di musica dovrebbe racchiudere in se: bellezza, raffinatezza, ricercatezza.
Il disco di cui sto parlando è “The Sound Of Perseverance”, datato 15 Settembre 1998, ultimo (capo)lavoro dei mai troppo compianti Death, gruppo di quel colosso, genio (o chiamatelo come volete) che era il buon Chuck Schuldiner.
Questo "T.S.O.P." è un lavoro molto complesso che racchiude in se tutto il percorso musicale del master-mind, nonché membro fisso della band, ed esplora i più diversi campi musicali, dal death, vera colonna portante del disco, fino al progressive metal, passando con estrema fluidità da momenti tesi quasi tragici, sottolineati soprattutto dallo scream di Schuldiner che in questo disco si fa più deciso e tagliente rispetto a quanto avesse fatto in passato, ad altri molto più rilassati, quasi fossero un raggio di sole nel mezzo di una tempesta, grazie a delle soluzioni melodiche che colpiscono già dal primo ascolto.
Il disco si presenta estremamente tecnico, con una grande quantità di assoli e riff complessi, sostenuti sempre dal basso di mr. Scott Clendenin e dalla batteria, questa volta più articolata e meno “spezzata” (passatemi il termine, non saprei come altro descriverla) di quanto non si fosse sentito nei precedenti lavori della band Floridiana (Tampa è la città di provenienza di Chuck): si apprezzano quindi composizioni quali la prima “Scavenger of Human Sorrow”, quasi tutta giocata su cambi ritmici repentini e assoli di chitarra, ma anche pezzi quali “To Forgive Is To Suffer” (vero e proprio capolavoro del disco secondo chi scrive); si apprezzano al contempo anche i momenti più riflessivi dell’opera e a proposito di ciò risulta impossibile non citare i 3 minuti e 42 secondi del brano strumentale che risponde al nome di “Voice Of The Soul”, nel quale appare la parte più melodica della band, presentandosi come un brano totalmente strumentale nel quale dona un grande apporto la chitarra acustica d’accompagnamento a quella elettrica che tesse una melodia davvero commovente.
Da segnalare, un po’ più per dovere di cronaca che non per particolare bellezza, la cover della celeberrima “PainKiller” dei Judas Priest (qui proposta in versione Death Metal), che pur non attestandosi sul livello qualitativo degli altri pezzi dell’album, risulta essere convincente e non fuori luogo.
Devo dire che quest’album è stato uno di quelli che più mi ha avvicinato ad un genere tanto complesso come quello del death metal, grazie non solo a questo modo di intenderlo, più vicino ai miei gusti (come già detto sono varie le incursioni progressive), ma anche perché ogni singolo brano riesce a trasudare sentimenti da ogni nota e soprattutto da una voce, quella di Chuck che resterà, proprio per la sua perseveranza nel continuare a fare ciò che veramente amava, nella storia dell’heavy metal mondiale.
Scusate, so che questa recensione già c’era, ma voleva davvero farla, magari non tutti voi ne sentirete il bisogno, ma a me andava.

Un grandissimo capolavoro death-metal.
La speranza di tutti è quella che da ‘lassù’ il grande Chuck continui a suonare la sua chitarra e continui a cantare death-metal, come solo lui sapeva fare.

Questo album è pieno di capolavori, cominciando subito con 'Scavenger' che ci fa capire che è un master-piece.
Il modo di cantare di Chuck è perfetto per il tipo di brani proposti, regalando emozioni uniche.

L'apice si chiama proprio questo 'sound of perseverance' ed anche l'ultimo primo della morte di Chuck Schuldiner (rip).
Questo capolavoro è terminato e così si ferma la carriera dei Death... ci auguriamo che Chuck continui a suonare la sua chitarra dal paradiso.

Voice Of The Soul è un gioiello strumentale che nessuno, nemmeno il più estremo degli ascoltatori di dance, troverà brutto o inascoltabile.
